Is it possible to clear the queue on the massmailer?

Yes, There should actually be a link to clear the queue in the mass mailer if the queue is not already empty. The link to clear the queue will not appear if the queue is already empty.
If not, then the following url should clear it.
yoursite.com/administration/notifies.php?action=empty
Or you could clear the queue database by truncating the table sys_sbs_queue
