For the last month, the only recorded activity on trac timeline has to do with payment processing. I'm sure all those pay per peep, slimy Dolphin sites that nauseate me to no end will benefit, but what about us folks that want to build something of true value to its members.
Please tell me you folks at Boonex are working on something more. For cripes sake, throw us some sort of scraps to chew on already.

Nahh, i am waiting on D8
By the time D8 is a stable platform, you'll be too old to remember what you wanted it for in the first place. Dolphin 7.1.4 was released almost 10 months ago. Since that time, we've seen about 8 blog posts from Boonex, and an occasional forum post when someone gets bored. I hope 7.1 is not going to be another project that is ditched before it has completely evolved into a mature, stable product..
If Boonex is hard at work on D8 or the next great thing, it sure would be good for customer relations, to clue us in. Whatever the next great thing is, I hope it is totally void of all the damn dating site CRAP. I'm tired of stripping all those idiotic profile fields and everything else dating related every time I install a fresh copy of Dolphin. There are TWO, maybe three dating sites on the internet people, and no one gives a shit about your shitty little Dolphin hookup sites.
I pray that the next major version of Dolphin has a more professional look and feel about it without all the annoying crap like "couples". Who the fck joins a website as a couple anyway? What... they have no separate identity? As far as I'm concerned, the only people that need to join a website as a couple, are Siamese twins. Let the next Dolphin be completely void of all that crap. All the folks that want to make one of those eerily creepy Dolphin hookup sites that have no redeeming social value whatsoever, will still have 7.1.4

No, 7,1 is perfect already. If it's possible please downgrade Dolphin to 6.0 and make it standard. |
That will be nice to have Dolphin 7.1.5 Now. I am getting bored. |

Agree with every word! I would like my sub categories for starters, that has to be more beneficial to any Dolphin site owner than Couples Profiles, lol! Just a 'yes it's coming soon' from Boonex would restore my faith
Like I said in my post yesterday, it's a lot of money to pay for a license when you have to do a lot of work to the core just to bring it to the standard other platforms are at. Don't get me wrong, you can get some good results with Dolphin with a little creativeness but you have to put in a lot of work to the core which begs the question "Why doesn't Boonex involve it's members here in what they would like to see & confirm on what they will be adding?" It would save them heaps of wasted hours if particular features they are adding are just being stripped down because they aren't wanted!!!

Involving ALL the members here, can produce some horrific results. It brought us things like the ridiculous avatar module, cool iris, open social, and various other useless crap. Everybody has their own little 'must have' that makes sense only to them. I've always tried to bitch about things that improve the core product... not waste time on things only a few people care about. Involving the community in development is fine, but it needs to be somewhat restricted. Sorry... if they don't know that you can't make a Windows program part of a web page, or if they still need to be spoon fed after using Dolphin for five years, they just don't have the tools to contribute to the development process.

I think the options like TAG, TALKED aBOUT, or MENTIONED like Facebook has is awesome. These features will keep members engaged or coming back. e.g I was about to get rid of my fb account then I got all kind of tags and mentions that I have to log in to check them out. |

I think if I hear another 'like Facebook' around here, I'll just kill myself. What will keep people coming back, is offering them something of value that they can't find a thousand other places... something almost no one around here seems to care about. Everybody is enthralled about catchy buzz words like SEO, backlinks, keywords, and page rank, etc....bla bla bla. It seems their only goal is to be the most popular site in the world for the search engines. I can't remember anyone ever talking about how to do something really great for their potential members. It all makes me think about the movie 'Idiocracy'.

I use Twitter and Facebook everytime I want to sit in my chair and help my ass get fatter. The only redeeming value to either is if you are using it to trick people into buying into the next big internet network marketing scheme..... Of course, you can have as much luck doing it at Mickey D's because that's where most of the social media members eat....

Not true at all! Twitter was developed as a Marketing tool which I do & have always used it for almost since it first launched. Since kids got a hold of it & Celebrities (oh wait! they're the same thing!!) it's getting as bad as Facebook. The plus side is you can use it fully without ever having to look at the Timeline & therefore completely cut out the idiots on there!

Yeah I agree. Maybe just involve Module Developers or rather those that contribute Modules regularly & of course who are around often. Not much point involving people who aren't!

HL has a good point here, developing and improving the core product should be the main goal of Boonex. The module developers will handle the other things. Of course a lot of people feel they are paying enough without buying extra modules to add to Dolphin to get features.
One of the main shortcomings I saw with Dolphin when I came in was that Dolphin does not have a plugin architecture. Way too often to add modules you have to edit the core files; that results in problems when upgraded for bug fixes; you have to make sure you don't overwrite the changes you made to core files and bring your site down. With a plugin architecture, you don't change core files; module developers may need to request new hooks in Dolphin at times. I help with a CMS where a plugin architecture was in place from day one, users of the CMS can add in widgets and plugins without needing to touch any core files. The core of the CMS has hooks and the module developers can tie into those hooks; and when necessary, hooks can be added. The WYSIWYG is one example, users can download and install the TinyMCE plugin or the CKEditor plugin using the editor of their choice.
Geeks, making the world a better place |
HL has a habit of this. He gets bored, then starts one of these pointless threads even though he knows nothing will come of it. Boonex has never really responded to it's userbase, why would they start now? http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |
Ahah, I still remember when Andrew Boon had indicated on his website that Dolphin 8 should released in March 2011
More than three years later, still NOTHING.
Bullshit!!!
Free Dating Site on: http://coolonweb.com |
They do not call them hooks, but dolphin is still very similar. Some of those scripts your using may be based on a PHP framework similar to Yii, Symfony, Zend, CodeIgniter or similar which most of them have a hooks type system. Dolphin just does it differently.
Modules can tie into a lot of areas in dolphin through the alert system. the classes, the template injection system, ect. There are a lot of things modules can do without touching the core code.
The problem is there is not enough of them. Example. There are not enough template injection points.
It's gotten better. As of dolphin 7.1, the later versions, we can now tap into forms dolphin generates to change, access or insert data. As well as a few other areas. But it needs to be better.
Most of my modules do not require any source changes. I have very few that do, I try to avoid it when i can.
Boonex stated in some module docs once that we should contact boonex if we need something added to dolphin to support a module. But most of the developers know what the result of those requests will be. https://www.deanbassett.com |

Nothing will ever be achieved unless people speak up & say what they would like to see. I posted this. They don't get my point. Deano stated "too fast for developers". 7.1.X are 'bugfixes'. 7.1 is already developed. Nathan stated "Give it another five months at least. (Kidding.)" Five months has passed and we're now 10 months. Long await is double bs. Update bugfixes already.
Andrew mentioned messaging system makeover. That's 7.2 which is 'Improvements & New Features'. Takes time to develop. Not too fast for developers... duh!
|
The minimum I expect in version 7.1.5 is to be 100% "responsive" and improve to a modern design and friendly. |
Update bugfixes already.
LOL, this has been request since I joined Boonex.
I could never figure out what they meant, fast forward four years and the post are the same. "When are all the bugs going to be fixed?"
Newbies, Dolphin will never be finished.. It's always an update to some bug and a new features added with new bugs.
Get used to it.
HL's website has been in production all this time; what exactly are you waiting for btw?

So what you are saying is Boonex go against the standard of ALL Open Source Development of Software of any kind in that they don't have a 'Current' stable release & a 'Nightly' release as I recall work in progress releases used to be called. Most developers of Open Source operate this way as standard!
|
Deano stated "too fast for developers"
They were releasing updates at a rate of once per month. That is to fast. Which is what i was referring to. This however is different. Quarterly, bi annually or annually are the norms for what are referred to as stable releases. For dolphin because of all the 3'rd party modules, a 6 month(bi annually) release cycle would be appropriate.

Or somebody show me how to get rid of the small Dolphin banner on the free/trial version, it's just annoying a little bit but it's ok.
Click the "x" on the top-right of the banner. But if you want to get rid of it permanently, you need to buy a license.

If you are talking about hl.com, I ditched that a long time ago. It's just a test site at this point. My real project is an enormous amount of work that will use a database with a million or so records... which I am developing myself. It going to take quite a bit of time.

What kind of car did you say you drive?
