I would like to get more info about 7.2
some of my questions are;
- is the core still based on current version (or new)
- what are the new updated featured we can expect (just a short list will do)
- is there a beta release (or demo release) soon
The reason for my topic is that i going to build a new site and i don't wanna spend a sh*t load of money that i can't use when i move to 7.2!!!

Trident (new name for Dolphin U) is not Dolphin 7. 7.2 is based on the same codebase as previous versions, only with a new license system based on that of Trident. if you own a license, there's no change. There's been a few advertised additions like MoxieManager, but the bulk is in Trac: http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/milestone/Dolphin%207.2.0 BoonEx Certified Host: Zarconia.net - Fully Supported Shared and Dedicated for Dolphin |
@Nathan, i know that but thank you anyways. will have a look at the link for now i don't give a rats ass about trident aka DU aka what ever...
Update: had a look and i don't believe that they will have a production version 7.2 before the summer... I know enough :-(

As far as Im aware, 7.2 will be the natural upgrade to the current 7.1 (I think still being renamed Dolphin Pro?)
I would think that so long as money spent is not on customised work, but on modules, then those modules (if from good vendor) will be upgraded to work on 7.2 anyway.
If however, you're spending a load of £$ on heavy customised work, then chances are it may need adapting to work on 7.2
At least this was my experience when we jumped 7.0 to 7.1!

Dolphin 7.2 will is the same core as 7.1. So most all modules should be ok and continue to be upgraded by most developers.
I would however be careful with template purchases. I believe dolphin 7.2 may include a new template design. A responsive design which may require changes to the current template engine. I am not certain on that, but i think this would be the only thing major about current purchases you would need to worry about. https://www.deanbassett.com |
Ok.. knowing all this now why on earth jump from 7.1.4 to 7.2 and call it Dolphin pro???? If 98% of it based on old stuff 'This is just stupid' just update to 7.1.5 and rename it instead of all this BS and don't let us wait for two years. |

It's just a name. Why worry so much over a name?

98% or not. It's how version numbers work. If even one change is a major change, then the middle number will be increased in the version number. A major change in the template system is enough to warrant that change in the version number.
However i believe they have more planned than that. One of the announcements was mentioned here. http://www.boonex.com/n/dolphin-pro-responsive-design-prototype
Considering dolphin(current) was not really designed to be responsive i imagine there is a lot of work to be done that will take a lot of time just for that one change alone.

@HL, i couldn't care less about the name. I want a outline with proper module filters and search function instead of me building it myself. I want a proper photo/video popup lytebox with comment and vote sections instead of page views that is so 2010.
All i am saying that the boonex development team should really pay attention to the demand and how people use websites these days and keep up. as when 7.2 is pushed into production i bet that some of the features or plugins will be depreciated or out of date.
But i'm still a happy dolphin... Just thinking outloud

that is so 2010.
That's the way it is, when you make other peoples ideas, your ideas.... when you follow instead of leading. However.... that methodology worked out OK for Microsoft.

I could make the argument that lytebox is so 2000. I would guess that about 30 seconds after Boonex released a photo module where all the content was dynamically loaded via ajax into a lytebox popup, people would be bitching about how it broke search engine indexing of photos and comments. One persons solution, is another persons problem.
There's a wise old saying: "The solution to a problem, merely changes the nature of the problem."

Thanks for pointing that out. I've always wondered how that numbering system worked.

Actually, Dolphin 7.1 had major changes from 7.0.9 including a new template engine and Boonex only went to the next point release; if I am correct that the third decimal format for Boonex releases was 0-9.
However, as pointed out by HL, it is only a name. Look at how Microsoft (and Apple) have jumped around with the naming of their OSes.
Edit: I have only been here a few yeas and started with 7.0.9 in a test site before the 7.1 release so if I am wrong, what is the standard release format for Boonex Dolphin releases.
Geeks, making the world a better place |
Before Dolphin, I tested Oxwall. Oxwall used the pop-up photo with comment section for their photo view. I thought it was horrible idea to have the comment section attached to the pop-up view. Oxwall has since redone their photo section and I don't think they currently have the comment section attached to the pop-up. I still don't like the way Oxwall is doing their photo section and personally like the current Boonex way over the Oxwall way. Geeks, making the world a better place |
Ok people, i get it...
a 1000 wishes & a 1000 ideas and the boonex development team has to pick which ones. It takes time to build & I just hope that when it comes it's worth the wait!
Thanks to all for the response

LOL! If you expect Boonex to EVER provide a finished product, you'll be waiting for a very long time. http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |
