micro sites in dolphin

Is it possible to create micro sites using one boonex license? For example, mysite.com/usermicrosite. How do I do this? Please.

yes - just use the same license as your main domain (yoursite.com) in the - what you call - micro site. I asked a similar question a while back

So how do I create the micro site function?

create a folder in your main domain called whatever - then upload dolphin to that folder. then go to yourdomain.com/whatever and do the install - voila. Apply the license to that site - basically you have a site wihtin a site.

@mayzfieldtv - I think you will need to explain your term "microsite" in more detail.

I have a feeling you and ProfessorSr are not thinking on the same wavelength.

What ProfessorSr just explained is the same as a separate site. Nothing micro about it. It's a full site installed in a sub directory of your current site. You can even point a domain or subdomain to it. It's a full website. I am not entirely sure if that is what you wanted to do. Your term "microsite" is way to vague.

microsite is an individual web page or a small cluster of pages which are meant to function as a discrete entity within an existing website. The microsite's main landing page can have its own domain name or subdomain.

Each member signs up through my homepage. when they sign up, dolphin automatically creates a subfolder for that member with their own web address like mysite.com/newmember. When people go to that member's url, it will look like a full website but it is actually a "microsite". So each member will have their own website in their folder with a chat room, blog system, and all other modules that I install from the admin. The members will not have their own administration panel, only front end capabilities. Each member can either create their own template or choose from a pre-designed template so it looks like their own site.

Imagine mysite.com/microsite1, mysite.com/microsite2, mysite.com/microsite3, mysite.com/microsite3,000,000

If I install dolphin in a sub folder one by one, it would be too much work. It has to be automatic.

However, ProfessorSr's idea would work if I were do add each site by hand but what if a hundred people sign up in one day? Unless I can automatically install a new boonex software with each new sign up but that would seem like I'm giving dolphin away for free.

I think the success of Facebook is partially based on the fact that it is decentralized. I can have my own network of friends and not be bothered with people that I don't know. It is almost as if Facebook allows members to have their own microsite at facebook.com/mysite within the main site of Facebook.com

-I edited this multiple times so you might want to read it again. I am done editing though.

Yea. Thats what i thought you meant.

A full dolphin install would be overkill for each member.

Also the url will conflict with the profiles. URLs with no prefix after the domain like the urls with /m/ are treated as profile urls. There would need to be a prefix so dolphin knows the difference between a profile and a microsite as you call it.

Anyhow. Dolphin obviously does not come with that ability stock. And i do not know of any modules that do it. You most likely will need to post a job request in the jobs section.

EDIT: Well there you go. Dezzy pointed out a couple of modules you can look at.

There is one other thing you will want to consider.

One dolphin website already attracts the attention of thousands of spammers.

I had one site not to long ago that i setup for use by only spammers. It was a honeypot site for my spam filter module. The spammers were joining that site at a rate of 2000 per day posting between 5000-7000 blog posts per day. That one site alone killed the bandwidth the hosting allowed for the site per month in only 18 days.

Now just imagine if you allow members to have mini sites and they don't police them. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of sites all attracting spammers to your server.

I see a nightmare in the making and a server that will be overwhelmed and incapable of processing all the requests.

I would seriously think this one over if i were you.

I was thinking just use facebook connect and an invite only feature. Or just facebook connect by itself.

I just read these and I guess the closest thing I can get without spending thousands of dollars for what I really want is AntonLV pages module with all of the pages addons. Any other ideas about this? Honestly I don't think my idea will work with the pages module. I think i will just have to save and post a job in the market. Who is the most trustworthy developer that can do this?

There are some other pages modules as well, search the market "pages" and see what comes up.

Not sure how you want chat to work among the different pages.  If you are going to post a job, your fist step is to draw up a very detailed specification with an algorithm of how you want things to flow.

Geeks, making the world a better place

sorry MayzFiled - I misunderstood what you meant. Thanks Deano for jumping in and getting that clarification

Just to somewhat add to GG's recommendation- Both Anton's Pages Module and Modzzz's Pages Module allow your members to EASILY embed a website within the Page(s) they create (Something I've been playing with for quite sometime now, and it's AWESOME!!!!!)

This is basically what you get-

 Website Embed

Website Embed2

EDIT-

This isn't exactly what you were looking to do, but I've also considered your idea in the past....This is what I ended up settling for, as many people already have websites....Much like saving space and resources by having video embed instead of allowing uploading of videos, Embedding websites works the same, and saves space and resources ;)

Yeah that is what I was thinking about settling for too, but I keep thinking of large companies like McDonald's. Will they want to create a page on my site? If I go down the street and talk to the owner of a local McDonald's, would this be something they could use to represent their company? These are the kind of questions I am running into.

You could look at it this way-

If you joined a site you like, because it caters to you and your needs, with like-minded people to network with, and it had this type of functionality....and you yourself had a basic personal website for you or your business....

What would you prefer? ------> Using the standard "Sites" feature?

Or would you rather customize your own Page on that site, and also even embed your own personal/business website inside that Page you created, where people had instant access to your personal/business website?

The answer for me would be easy.

Some folks who are great at marketing such a thing could even get people to pay for a membership level which allows people to do this.

Quite frankly, I don't know why this feature hasn't been offered more in modules here? I feel a Pages module without this feature is a Pages module that's going no where....We should have been doing this here before Facebook was...But the good news is- We have the opportunity to do it better really....because last I checked, Facebook Pages weren't really all that great as far as I was concerned. Things may have gotten better, but I could care less at this point really.

Anyways....If you want people to use your site, you gotta give them things they can really benefit from, and this particular thing is no-brainer I think :)

For $50- You can't really go wrong can ya?

You are correct. Pages is a good idea. It will allow page owners to connect with site members to grow their network making it easier to promote their brand.
