member_privacy.php
Its that page, where if you have a dozen modules installed, you'll also have 50 or 60 drop down selectors on this page, with somewhere between 200 to 300 options. It's bewildering to me. I can imagine how confusing it must be to a newly registered member that has never seen a Dolphin site before. Here's a small sample:

Yeah... sure it looks nice and neat, but at a glance, you just don't see the entire picture. In my opinion, this is one of those things where less is less. At the same time, all of those selector lists on one page, is just too much, The member_privacy page is both too little, and too much at the same time. In the above example, to change all the settings, you have to click each down arrow, then click on an option, for a total of 8 clicks to set all the options.
I would rather see a checkbox grid for selecting all these options. Below is an example:

Yes, this is more stuff on an already crowded page, but at a glance you can see ALL the options and ALL the settings. To set all of the options in the above example takes 4 clicks...... half of the selector/drop down format.
No.... I don't want to see a page with 300 checkboxes on it. The page member_privacy.php is a perfect place to have tabbed content. There's a tabbed content function in jQuery, so this wouldn't be difficult. The user would just have to select a tab belonging to each module, and then check the desired privacy level for each option. I believe this would be less intimidating to new users. There's plenty of room to use a more descriptive language string to the left of the checkboxes.

This is just a rough example to convey the idea. The checkbox grid can be simplified more than what is shown in the example, I just didn't want to spend any more time on an example interface. It would not be necessary to have every single checkbos labeled as in the example.... each column of checkboxes could have a single label at the head of the column, which would clean up the UI considerably,

I like it, simplified.

I just wish the HTML gods would finally give us the ability to directly style checkboxes and radio buttons with css. The checkbox grid would look and feel a lot better with big, prominent colored checkmarks. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |

RE:
Maybe some of these.
Yeah... at least now you can do it with css tricks, and don't need to use JS. Still can't style them directly.
Anyway, what this might look like with big, purdy checkboxes:

And not the buttons only must change.
Why I can see modules, where I don't have write access?

When a user don't have right access to events, then they don't must set the rights on the eventmodul.

You do understand that this topic is only about a conceptual user interface.... don't you? My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
- there in one control for the privacy which is used everywhere, including this page
- by the occupied space both variants are the same vertically, and horizontally default boonex variant is more compact
- this page is disabled by default
- actually it maybe many options in privacy list - including system ones or created by user, so it maybe too long for the one line of checkboxes
