how to stop ppl creating fake 'admin' nics in chat

Hi, our site has been getting fake 'admin' nics in chat, who then proceed to abuse my members, how can i stop visitors creating 'admin' nicknames for example 'admin3' and make admin a prohibbited nickname without preventing non members using the chat, as we use it as a comms tool for our customers.

I have recommended the FREE "nickname" module in the market. http://www.boonex.com/m/Dolphin_nicknames_filter

Your other option is to make all of the possible "admin" names as actual site members but not making them active, therefore guest signing in your chat will not be able to use the taken names. It will be a daunting task if they are persistent.

I would also make a note in your chat rooms on the lobby pages warning your site members about the current "spamming" and tell them to report or ignore.

cheers newton! i thank you for your suggestions, agreed daunting task to create all admin nics, but its has to be done i guess, i thank you for the suggestion of the nickname module, whilst it is not spam more my competitors who just wish to cause issues in this new web format we are using (dolphin), i think even if i create some it may deter them.

The operative phrase here is "without preventing non members using the chat"

That nickname filter only prevents users from registering with specified nicknames.  If you are going to allow non members to post in chat, the nickname filter mod is useless.

yes i had another 3 fake admins hit my customers calling them all sorts of names, ended in refunds for my customers who either do not believe its a fake admin or feel i'm incompetent for allowing it.. either way i cant win , i banned them in chat but noticed they reentered again so not sure why that was the case...

I don't know that there's a way to stop non-members from making certain names, but there's a mod in the marketplace that lets you stop members from using certain names. So if you make people register to use chat then you can control it. Perhaps if you removed all but the most basic things from registration and just have nickname and dob?

@divetrek - Why not just block non-members from being able to use the chat? Problem solved and you won't have to worry about any more refunds. Well at least not regarding the chat issue.

Nothing to see here

thats unfortunately not an option to block non members from chat, as it is our customer support for our members (real not virtual) as we area  scuba business in reals and we switched to dolphin to reduce our phone support, i guess we must just wait for new tools to develop and ban them as they come so long as the bans work.

Don't worry, in about 3 years or so, Rayz will probably have a paid mod that adds a name filter.

Until Rayz gets off his ass, and brings his little flash apps into the 21st century, you should check this out:

If all you need for your customers, is text chat, this is a good solution.  You would need the Professional PLUS edition, and it'll cost you $125 yearly.  It looks like it has the banning features that you will need.  $2.40 a week is a small price to pay for something you can count on for interaction with customers.

Creating several dummy accounts like " siteadmin, adminofsite, webmaster," or whatever the names they are using on your site.

When a guest comes into the chat and tries to login using one of the taken names they get rejected, (just like if your Dolphin admin account is named "masterblaster," they cannot login as a guest using that name.)

of course there are ways around it but it still should help, it does for me.
