how much I have spent on dolphin mods...

since I started a site about 6 months ago...

$1398 Yell

about a third of that was on slight customization on mods by their authors.

Now I guess some of that wont work with the latest upgrade...

anyone beat that?

I'm over that if I include all the stuff I bought that didn't quite work out.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

I can beat all of you.   I used a "recommended" development company ( really one guy who uses a bunch of subcontractors ) do customizations and enjoyed the following:

- Spent $21K

- Missed EVERY delivery date ( this was at a month level not a specific date )

- He wouldn't commit to anything

- Complained that our scope grew when he actually did less then the original provided scope document

- Worked with multiple subcontractors of his who complained to us they weren't getting paid

- Never received a project plan, status updates, or anything concrete in writing

- He went missing for days at a time ( this was normally when he didnt' have good news )

- Made promises about HIS mod integrating into Dolphin ( which who knows if it will happen )

- Observed this guys name and company under the dispute area doing the same thing to another customer

The good news is that we did get some good graphics out of him, a bases to start building, and it forced us to find different consultants.   We are now using MediaUS who has some very good Boonex and PHP developers,  a structured approach, and isn't fly by night.   We are actually doing things now that the previous "recommended" guy said we couldn't.

wow.... 21k...!

Some money in the 'build you a dolphin site' business! Wink

Hope it works out for you! Must show me the finished site youre doing, very interested to see what that amount of money will do to Dolphin!

Im glad to say that out of the $1398 Ive spent on my site (actually across 2 sites...) I've made it back already after a few months!

Onwards and upwards from here (hopefully!)

Just gotta get my 7.0.3 upgrade to work then 7.0.4 .... then refix all the custom upgrades that were done for 7.0.2!

Ouch...

I know that Intellectual property is priceless but to share it to others with a fee, in my own view it is  very expensive I guess...

We are very close to completing the site and will be happy to share once we are completed.   There is a lot of customizations that we have had to do at the group admin level that doesn't come out of the box in Dolphin.     The challenge for us has been creating multiple managed communities ( groups ) within Dolphin.   The system is great if you want to have a single community with groups that still have a single management structure but when you move to a multi-tenant model the fun starts ( like all software products on the market).   Our group admins have the ability now to approve / disapprove / auto approve members of their groups profile changes, pictures, video's, and blogs.

We are just starting to look at matching so that will be the next challenge I guess.     In general we are happy with the selection but the development company ( or should I say individual ) really impacted out ability to get our product to market.   The entire team has been doing IT consulting for 15+ years.   We opted to hire a "professional" based on speed to market.   What we got though was a real amateur.
