dolphin as a relay mail server

I get a list of bounced emails every morning..

None of these members are in my membership database. Host for web has confirmed (to the best of their ability) my email server is not being used as a relay mail server...  yet.

everyday i get a list of bounced emails that do not exist in my membership database. i.e. just_another_email9@yahoo.com.

There is not really any other software on my server...

Any ideas?

I have thought about changing my mail server password, but I think I already did that anyway as part of my normal maintenance.

Your presentation was not exactly clear to me.  The thing is, spammers out there will spoof emails.  I get emails sent to me from me.  The SMTP is not secure in the least.  There was a proposal to make changes to the SMTP but it would require every server out there to be changed so nothing was ever done.  Instead they are adding "layers" to the exisiting SMTP to try and do something about the problems.  Many, or maybe most, mail servers will require that the sending domain have a reverse dns entry, a rDNS, set up; the FQDN of the mail server must resolve back to the IP address or the email will be denied, it will bounce back.  That is just one of the tools used, there are others more advance.  I have set up a few mail servers and having to deal with your mails getting denied is frustrating.

However, I am not sure this is what you are saying is happening to you.

If someone registers with an incorrect email address you can expect these bounce messages. I'm currently in the final stages of testing a new function for my BotStopper that does a proper email check. It runs on my live site and up to now, not one false positve while my unconfirmed accounts are almost down to 0.

My expectation is to have  this functionality available by the end of this week, beginning next week.

Unfortunately the market is a complete mess at the moment and many modules are very hard to find, or can't be found at all. People looking for the module can find it here

Are you testing this with webbased email accounts as well?  I have looked at a few of the email checks on the web but I am not sure they are very reliable.  I am assuming you are doing this at the server level like I would do when I open up a telnet connection to test a mail server.

Your running my spam filters. Most likely your getting a bounce back from a welcome message that was sent when they signed up, but after signup the filters detected spam and deleted the account.

Ignore them.

Sorry, I removed the post since it was irrelevant to the subject, but to answer your questions... yes and yes (outlook/yahoo/gmail/etc.)
