boonex becoming kinda dead place again

Noticed really long time of inactivity in this place - no news, roadmap no change long time, market seems pretty dead also - very few new mod or updates of old ones... strange

Dolphin became a teenager and you know how teenagers are.

For me, I don't need a lot of features like video, etc. At least not until I have members requesting this and then want to pay extra for these things... So, the 7.1.4 version is solid. It meets my needs for the moment. As a side line, I am working on my own front end replacement but would be proprietary for Single Booklovers. I want to flip this company at some point and it might be better if we owned the entire code soup to nuts...

hehe teenager ? Looks more dolphin become old 90 years inactive granddaddy   :-) But yeah latest dolphin is i think first usable d7xx version released - so this version is really usable on live sites without overload of custom work and custom fixes but still ... i would expect some more boonex activity with new version... as there are some good fixes waiting..

The new version already 360 days running, is very stable and easier to work on.

It has slowed here as many went to other platforms during the switch and problems that just were never fixed. (forums, chat)

I helped someone recently who came back to dolphin after some time.....Then jumped ship again because of trouble getting registration working for his particular niche....blah blah blah....

It gave me a chance to see the other platform he went to, and I must say- I was surprised to how much was included in their base package that I've had to purchase through 3rd party mods....

So it makes me wonder as well- Is some of this due to losing a competitive edge?

On a positive note- We did manage to win this person back to dolphin, and someone was able to resolve his registration challenge :)

Some of us though- are painstakingly invested here.

I left cause of the cost of modules... and the complexity of the platform... the annoyingness of avatar's added as photos... confusing video/photo management.... oddities in how they designed the platform and the functionality around it... time consuming moderation/administration.... I've spent ~$75 getting what I need elsewhere... here I spent $1000 +

That being said... I'm glad I came here at $99... I wouldn't think of it now if I was new... now I have 2 licenses collecting dust...

IMHO its because Boonex didnt and still doesnt give a damed about the users and doesnt look after the interest of those that have purchased licences. It cares more about allowing the module market to rip people off because it knows full well that without the module market there is no Dolphin which means no Boonex.

Yea, I paid 1,000 not really knowing what I was getting into.

And then they "lost my licenses" and tried to get me to pay all over again.

After about 30 days of wrangling, they reinstated my licenses..

I think the best course of action is to partner with somebody like Deano and Dolphin Jay. Deano writes a lot of good modules and Dlphin Jay fills in the blanks that others leave out... just look at how cool my site is.. thank you Dolphin Jay ;) www.singlebooklovers.com

I think now the front end works pretty well. Albeit I had to purchase about a dozen modules to get it working the way I would like it to work. It does work. At least 7.1.4 does.

The back end, if you are trying to run a business with the thing, Dolphin is severly lacking... I am writing my own back end piece that has no integration with Dolphin except read only access to the data tables for reporting and charting...

and the most important one that bugs EVERYONE .. that we have complained about from day one.. joining and uploading a pic, that pic should automatically become the display pic, there should be no resetting, and no setting to avatar, once you upload the pic on the join it should automatically set as the display for that profile.. all these years and that never fixed :(

I have been thinking about this topic for quite awhile. I saw some threads about Boonex not doing anything, they make their money on the store... etc.

I am not defending Boonex, but this is a reality. We all have to make money, including the folks at Boonex.

For very little, or even no money, you can get a decent site up and running. But that's just it, its a basic site. What do you expect for little or no money. Like every other software manufacture, there are other people to fill in the gaps, Apple Store, etc.

Get the Boonex script and partner with some of the reliable store vendors and be thankful that Dolpin is not 5-10k USD and you get 100% poprietary code which you cannot easily modify or pay hundreds of USD or more a year for support.

The more I think about this, the more I think the Dolphin script is a pretty good deal at 7.1.4. Earlier versions? Questionable.

I am not sure if you are referring to the BoonEx Market or not, but to let you know.. BoonEx makes no money from the Market and actually waves all 'resposibilities and/or liabilities' for the items sold there.

To my knowledge, they only make their money on: Membership fees, Licenses, Affiliate Partners (such as preferred hosting), and donations.

Nothing to see here

I agree with freakpower, for instance, interest in modules purshase is not the same as it was even a year ago or two years. I can see some amount of views, but no questions. Even 50% discount doesn't help to get interested people in really useful modules. Usually it happened after Dolphin updates, but not for such long time .

According to some marine biologists that have studied dolphins, the life span of a dolphin is up to 20 years old.

However, it has been proved that some dolphins have reached the age of 48.
