What if the author asked about full clone, and not the template? )

This can be done but the question is are you willing to take the risk of funding. :) Some time ago there is one client funded a very big amount of money to clone Facebook he is really into it he get a good server and A+ programming team.

So its done what's next?

The big challenge now is Marketing? The plan either to get even or take down the Gigantic site so called Facebook, by doing that, well you must invest on SEO, place ads everywhere, talk to Game devs,  Hire a good online/local marketer etc. etc. etc. And does not guarantee you become a success.

To make the story short he close down the site, reason cannot support anymore server & programming cost.

In my point view  what matters most is uniqueness and originality. But no harm in trying as the saying "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.".

I think you would be better off here, http://blueboxphp.net/premium/indexo.php

but then again you also need to think about the lawsuits you may be subjected to.

"An Indonesian blogger, Ainun Nazieb, is in a little bit of hot water. He created a WordPress theme based off the pre-timeline Facebook profile design. In fact, it’s almost an exact clone. His problem is that Facebook found it. If you haven’t paid much attention to how Facebook handles things like this, I’ll take a minute to explain: they take legal action."

tread carefully with facebook and ebay and other mega sites... they take no prisoners and are not afraid the throw their virtual weight around in a legal sense!

I purchased a URL a while ago for a charity - aidbay under a few different extensions.

The charity was aiming at an auction site with a small % going to good causes instead of a fat corporate wallet.

Guess what... within just 1 hour of the domain purchase, legal cease and desist emails had been sent...

Within the email was a LIST of companies they had successfully taken to court and sued for stupid amounts of money!

Can be the name, part of the name, the appearance of the site, the logo... doesn't matter. They don't even legally have to have ownership of it, they will just throw the book at you. End of the day, who want to take on one of those monsters with their billion$ legal teams!

Sadly so wrong they can bully this way but they get away with it all the time.

Did you know that FB have a loophole within terms and conditions that prevents anyone who is a user or has ever held a FB account from using the 'words' face and book, as well as timeline on any website? They can't legally own those words, so they get you to agree to legally never use them in the T&C! crafty gits...

When you live in a corrupt world own by the rich and powerful you do as you are told.  Even if you are in the right, they will drain every penny and then some from you with one injunction or motion after another that you have to answer.

Remember Occupy Wall Street?  What happened to them?  Wall Street went to the government; the NSA collaborated with local police in the cities; and yes, this is documented; heavily redacted documents but documented just the same, to break up the protests even if they had to bash a few heads in while doing it.  Then laws were quickly passed that made it illegal for protesters to gather in public places.  End of story.  And this from a government claiming they cared so much about Libyans and Syrians being crushed by their government when that same government did exactly the same thing to its own citizens; and unarmed citizens peacefully protesting unlike the murderous protesters in Libya and Syria.

I will now step down from my soap box.

Geeks, making the world a better place

Everytime I hear someone say "make my site like Facebook,, etc", I cringe and must ask "Why?"  I'm still waiting on that awesome explanation that will help me make sense of it.

Does not matter. I would not bother taking such requests. And no other developer should either.

If the site becomes popular, Facebook will sue them so bad they will need to call a proctologist to get a nice soothing ointment for their sore A$$
