You will have to excuse me - I am going to be asking some newbie questions, even though I have been here for years. I just did an upgrade from 7.09 to 7.1.4 and I lost my members block on my home page. Am I missing something? - or is this just an anomaly from the my specific upgrade. Also, is that "random members display with pictures" mod still available - sorry, forgot who made that.

Also, just so I don't make a new post for the many questions I am likely to have - has the flash banner rotator been eliminated, grrrr. I am likely to be grumpy about this for a little while. |
7.0.9 to 7.1.x resets all page blocks
solution: builders - page builders - homepage - drag blocks back to active
The js flash banner is gone but you can add your own back in from settings basic settings... paste code into the html view

Hi Jay - nice to see you here. That block is no longer in the builders section - could the upgrade have deleted it somehow?
The site is the original one I did at http://CalTrade.com - god it looks like crap now. I just noticed it trashed the profile pictures also - is there a way to get those back.
I'll have to figure out how to do that flash banner thing again - don't quite get what you are saying.
So far it seems like every other major Boonex "upgrade" - a major loss of functionality. Please tell me it gets better.

Heads up,
The members block is there, has problems and it only looks good in a small column.
If your site had a flash banner at the top, as long as you kept your old template, you should be able to move it over, I did.
When I'm upgrading .9 > 7.1.x I rename the old templates, do NOT remove, therefore allowing you to make gradual shifts to the new formats.
I can personally share a site, but not here that I completed showing you the differences.
http://www.boonex.com/prolaznik made the random mod, not sure how it does as I never use it and he has not been here in quite some time as HL is on hiatus too.

Yes, i saw the members block also if you go directly to the community site and not through the iframed main page.
One thing you may not be aware of.
7.1 has completely changed the template system. Old templates for dolphin 7.0.9 and under will not work on 7.1, so don't try to use them. It will make a complete mess of your site.

@Dolphin Jay - I would like the old flash banner rotater back - do you have that code?
@Newton - too late _ already did the upgrade. Thanks for mentioning about the member's block problems. Sorry to here prolaznik is gone. HL too huh - burnout I guess - this stuff can be pretty exhausting.
@deano - thanks for mentioning that block is on the "all members" page. It doesn't look as bad there. Is there a way to get that to the homepage?
Why do we lose so much functionality - and seemingly gain so little, with every "upgrade". It seems like the upgrades here are all set for some mythological future where everything will be perfect, but we never get there. If fact, is seems like we keep going backwards.
Right now, my objective is just to make my site look "not disgusting" - making it look good is too high a bar right now. I will be working on this, but take a look at:
http://caltrade.com/members
Pretty bad huh. Now take a look at another site I built:
http://World-Startups.com
That site never got traction - partly because I didn't have a great business model and didn't work on it much, but at least it looks decent.
Just out of curiosity, did a lot of people throw in the towel after 7.09? The community here seems far less dynamic then it was a few years back.

@deano - thanks for mentioning that block is on the "all members" page. It doesn't look as bad there. Is there a way to get that to the homepage?
Well. That's not what i said. I did not specify a page.
What is said was i saw it. It is there. On the index page.
http://www.caltrade.com/members/
Right side. It has a heading of New Members. But that looks just like the dolphin 7.1 member block to me.
https://www.deanbassett.com |
ok, it doesn't to me - I agree with what Newton said - it only looks good in the right column now, which is where I moved it. |
I am just getting back to my train wreck at http://caltrade.com/members and mentioned that flash banner that was in 7.0 in a message I wrote to another member tonight. While I was writing it I remembered the comment Newton made here "as long as you kept your old template you can move it over". How much of the template? Just the flash banner? Also don't really understand Dolphin Jay's comment about "adding your own back in from the basic settings". Is there a common flash banner that everyone uses? or is there a way to use the old one?
I have another site at http://world-startups.com which - thank god - I left in 7.0. It may not be great, but I don't think it looks horrible like Caltrade does. Plus, everything more or less works unlike caltrade which is like an early version of the ObamaCare website.
I especially like the upper right login which was a mod that Prashank did. So what is the best way to get back to where I was. Can parts of that old template and site appearance be salvaged? 7.1 has been a massive disaster for me. Even after this just about everything is broken, but this would be a start.

I'm not sure if this will help you at all with your main index banner, but this is the "standard" html for 7.1.x you can change images, links to your preference (change YOURWEBSITE.COM to your web address);
<div class="bx-splash" style="position: relative; height: 237px; background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: 0px 0px; background-image: url('http://YOURWEBSITE.COM/templates/base/images/bx_splash_image.jpg');"> <div class="bx-splash-txt-bg" style="position: absolute; z-index: 1; bottom: 0px; width: 100%; height: 96px; background-color: #ffffff; opacity: 0.7;"><img src="http://YOURWEBSITE.COM/templates/base/images/spacer.gif" /></div> <div class="bx-splash-txt" style="position: absolute; z-index: 2; bottom: 0px; width: 100%; height: 96px;"> <div class="bx-splash-txt-cnt bx-def-margin" style="position: relative; opacity: 1.0;"> <div class="bx-splash-txt-l1" style="font-size: 36px;">Welcome to the community!</div> <div class="bx-splash-txt-l2 bx-def-font-grayed" style="font-size: 14px;">This social networking site is powered by <a href="http://www.boonex.com/dolphin">Dolphin Community Software</a> from BoonEx.</div> <div class="bx-splash-action bx-def-padding-sec-topbottom" style="position: absolute; top: 0px; right: 0px;"><button class="bx-btn bx-btn-primary" onclick="window.open ('join.php','_self');">Join</button> <button class="bx-btn" style="margin-left: 10px;" onclick="showPopupLoginForm(); return false;">Login</button></div> </div> </div> </div>
Edit: After looking at your site, it seems your main banner images are 900px wide, make them wider (approx.; 1120px and it should look fine.

While I was writing it I remembered the comment Newton made here "as long as you kept your old template you can move it over". How much of the template?
Well, just about all the old stuff.
i.e.
DT_max_red for 7.0.9 has many things I wanted to carry over, major was the banner.
Now the developer did update the same template for 7.1.x but there are so many differences as we see.
The reason for keeping the template, actually renaming so it would not show for members, I moved many graphics I had edited for the first one, so my move over went well.
In other words, if your template maker updates the template, keep the old one; a lot of the changes can be moved over.

So for back to your topic at hand..
I use this module instead of the default block, and at $1.50US for the module, it's a bargain.

Tell Denre I sent you.. lol
ManOfTeal.COM a Proud UNA site, six years running strong! |
@rhimpr - thank you - I will try that.
@newton Thanks for the info, and GREAT find on that anywhere member's block. Jeez though $1.50? Yes, great deal, and I will absolutely buy it. Even for a broke guy like me that is not an issue, but why charge at all? More specifically, why aren't needed functions like that just incorporated into the software. I find the firewall that Boonex has put between themselves and this community to be frustrating. Over the years I have seen dozens of simple mods like this with basic functionality that never get added, so with every new release we have to practically start over from zero.
Anyway, venting. Thanks for your help.
