What does "subscribe" to a member mean?

When you hover a member avatar, you get a pop-up menu with several options. One of them is "subscribe". What is the meaning of subscribing to a member? What does it do/what do you get notified of?

If someone is familiar with this option, please save me some time on trial and error...

OK from what I can tell when you subscribe to a member ... you are agreeing that you wish to be updated of their activities throughout the site >> example: member adds new avatar then the subscriber will be informed!

I'm sure I'm right about this .... I maybe wrong!

That is correct, but depends on the privacy settings for that member who's content is being subscribed to.

Hope that makes sense..

This is my signature, there are many like it but this one is mine...

I'm not sure I see the sense of having both the abilities to befriend + to subscribe to a person, it's a bit confusing. If you want to know what someone else is up to, better off befriending him and not "go behind his back".

I think I'll remove this option, I'd rather have 1 familiar mechanism of making connections.

Thank you both for your help!

You can subscribe to various places on the site.  When you befriend someone, you want to be friends with them and it adds them to the privacy setting if you choose "friends".  Subscribe is useful to keeping up with someone; perhaps you like their blog posts, so you can subscribe to their blog to see when they add content but you don't necessarily want to be friends with them.

Geeks, making the world a better place

I understand, and use, the subscription options throughout the site. I don't understand the option to subscribe to a person instead of being friends with him. This is an option I think I'd rather not have. I don't think it feels comfortable to know that someone can follow your doings without being in your friends list- a list you can view and control.

Regarding blogs- there is currently no option to subscribe to an entire blog, but only to single posts, which is a bit ridiculous. So although subscribing to a person might give you the option to "subscribe" to his blog, it also gives you the option to follow him on other areas he might not be aware of. I don't like it.

The option to subscribe to a person- I think I'll hide/remove. other subscriptions- I don't mind having.
