SO>>>>> Not worth it

Everytime I make a little progress, something goes to hell and causes me to loose hundreds of hours of work. This time, it's Modzzz classified ads. I followed the upgrade instructions to go from 2.12 to 2.13 and BAM, massive DB errors and site goes down. So, I thought, I'll just uninstall it and reinstall it, that should correct it and it did. EXCEPT that it FLUSHED hundreds of ads and all the content in the DB.

My site was just starting to get used as a classified ad location for all things tow trucks. Hundreds of ads all over Facebook and elsewhere when this happens. Any credibility I've built is now lost. Thanks for nothing.

Who in the hell builds a mod like this? In fact, I think this is the second time I've lost all the content from one of Modzzz mods..... Uninstalling the mod SHOULD NOT dump all the content, that's just stupid. At the very least, you should be asked if you want to preserve the data.

I've been here since 2009 and I really have tried to hang in there but this might be the final straw. I need a community script that I can build that will actually reach completion someday.

Pull it back up from the last backup.

BTW: when you uninstall a module, it will perform the query in the uninstall.sql file located in the module.  You can edit that file to control what happens when you uninstall a module.  Some modules also store data in a directory under the particular module directory; usually a data or files directory.

Uninstalling most modules will dump the data.  However, backing up the database and /modules directory will protect from lost of that data.

However, I do agree that some extra steps should be taken.  It is easy enough to put up a red warning stating that uninstalling the module will result in complete data lost, proceed, yes or no.  Even the core code is bad about not having alerts for things that can not be undone.  I get scared every time I do things in the backend because alerts and messages are almost non-existence.  For example, if I select five members to be deleted, it would be nice if a confirmation listing those members was presented so I could have a double check that I did not accidentally include a member that I don't want to delete.

Feeling the same almost daily. the site had just 5 members only when I was paying  a server for over $5,000 a year and paying developers to help me fix issues all the time. This is crazy.. I ask myself should I stay or just quit.... at the same time the little guy inside me saying ""Losers quit when they're tired. Winners quit when they've won."" but how much $$ I will have to spend?

I'm looking for alternative solutions and I'm willing to pay top dollars for stable, flexible software.  because I'm tired of upgrading every other month and the lack of support from the vendor.  They should just put everything together and release 1 version every other 6 months or so, instead of a new version every month and we have to change everything all over again (and it's very easy to break).

But so far I can't find anything better than Dolphin lol :)

SkyForum, sorry to hear that, hope you had a backup?

Always good to have a full backup, then a clone copy to test ANY updates to 3rd party content, plus official updates...

Especially when you have a working site with users...

for the others who posted hear, a little advice after using D for several years and working on countless sites... keep it simple.

The more complex you make the site, the more addons you use, the more updates you have to run, the more possibilities for things to go wrong. People like simple :-)
