Profile Customizer question

We are going to be using the feature and I want to make its availability more prominent.

Is there any way to pull it to its own Page?  I'd like the option to put it in the navigation menu as well as the action button on the Profile page.  That way I could also include an html block for a quick tutorial about how to use the feature.

~ yes, I know that "blinging" a profile is stupid but some people love it and we have another reason for using it as well.

If blinging is allowing a member to make changes to their page, then it is one of the must haves on a social site; members want to customise their page to their personality.

The profile customiser opens in a block on the members page; profile page.  This is how you want it as they can click preview and see the changes applied to their page.  As for the tutorial, I would advise creating a tutorial page with images to help illustrate how to use the customiser.  I suppose you could create a block to open on the page in the same manner as the customiser with the tutorial but that is going to add to the page and may be in the way.

You are going to have to add items to the customiser as it comes out of the box very limited in scope.  For example, no background attachment or background size (CSS3).

The out of the box functionality is OK for us, in fact we removed Themes to make it even  more simple to use.  We will only be allowing Borders, Fonts and Backgrounds as customizable options.

I'm going to include "how to" answers in both our FAQ and a User Guide I've created, but members probably won't look there for answers.

Imho the best solution would be to have the PC block load on a new page where I could also add a tutorial block, but I'm not sure pulling the function to a new page is even doable.

Failing that, if I could add a couple of text lines to the bottom of the PC block it would probably work for me but I can't find that block to even begin to edit it.  I have tried the Block Tools mod but the block doesn't show as an option on the Profile page.

Themes can be useful; they allow members to store their customisations.  I have members that have created themes for the holidays; so they can quickly put up their theme for the current holiday; or simply switch between different settings.  Otherwise, they have to recreate the customisation each time.

so maybe we'll eventually put them back, but right now I've got this bigger issue to sort out.

While waiting for an answer about the ability to place this block on its own page (and in the nav menu), I tried a different solution by using the lang key (pic below).  Its far from perfect but as plan B it will do.

for future readers, the lang key is:  _bx_profile_customize (Boonex Profile Customize)

Now, how would I go about adding all 3 options (Background, Fonts & Borders) to the dropdown?

TIA

The dropdown is populated by choosing the part you want to customise.  Look at the upper right corner: backgrounds, fonts and borders, the dropdown will change depending on what areas they want to choose to customise.  By the way, boxes backgrounds can be set independently of the page; so you can add box backgrounds to the dropdown list.  You need to visit the profile customiser in the backend'admin to see how the customiser settings work.

Thx and I understand the how the dropdown is currently populated.  I'd still like all 3 (or 4 if I add boxes) to be in there at once though.  I know its redundant but users will probably look there first before even noticing the small blue links to the right so I want to make it easy for them.  Plus, many will be confused just because there is only 1 option and wont even look any further.

You need to go out and start looking at the profile customiser module, you will need to make some code changes.  One thing is maybe move the top links to inside just above the dropdown and have a caption; "Select area first then select from dropdown list"

Thx.    Perhaps a better option is simply hiding the dropdown since with only 1 choice in each they are really kind of pointless.  I'll have my developer look into it.

Maybe there is only one now.  If you go into the admin you can see where you can add more.  What if your members start yelling they want to change the background of the boxes?  If your remove the dropdown from the form, they won't be able to choose; of course I guess you could have your developer to put it all back in place.

unless you become the houstonlively of my site bitching about how the lack of box backgrounds is a sign of the coming apocalypse I doubt anyone will notice its absense Wink

here's an addition to my solution.  I deleted the "select" in the lang key so the dropdown box remains but doesn't do anything, including making users think its the navigation option.

lang key =  _bx_profile_customize_select_target (Boonex Profile Customize)

another fun fact.  the lang key for the Profile Customizer module link in Admin pulls from the same key that I orig edited so my modules navigation was all screwed up until I went in the builders and fixed it

I will gladly leave the room.  You are talking about stripping out functions from the customiser when my members are constantly asking for more; more areas of their page they can customise.  I was just trying to share real world use from real world users on my site.

Damn, did the door just hit me on my arse on my way out? Cool

Ha.  You are always welcome and your advice is most appreciated, even when I ignore it

I have spent some time customising the Profile Customiser including changing out the colourpicker.  If you need any help in the future with making changes to it, just send me a PM.
