On-site Message System

I need information on the on-site message system.  Is it using the server mail system in any way?  I had assumed that the on-site message system simply stored messages in the database and had nothing to do with any smtp or sendmail or any php mail function.

I had installed Dovecot on the server to handle imap and pop3 mail and it caused the Dolphin message system to stop working properly.  I had to stop Dovecot to be able to send messages to other members when using Chrome.

It does if the option to send a message to email is checked. Otherwise it should not.

However, dovecot is not a mail server. It does not send messages, it simply accepts connections from mail clients to access their mailboxes. It is not used by dolphin at all and should not even have any affect.

OK, thanks Dean.  From the dovecot.org website:

"Dovecot is an open source IMAP and POP3 email server for Linux/UNIX-like systems..."

I have no idea.  I know that I shut the dovecot server down and was able to send a message with Chrome.  Before, pressing the send button did nothing.  Could have just been a coincidence.  Something else might be going on.

Yes, correct. IMAP and POP3.  Not SMTP. So it is not a mail server in the sense that is does not send and receive email. It's cannot replace Sendmail or Postfix which are SMTP mail servers and are the type of servers used for sending and receiving email. IMAP and POP3 servers provide mail retrieval services for email clients.

I cannot see how dovecot could have any affect. None at all.

Neither do I Dean, neither do I.  I think it was just a coincidence and something else is at play here.  Frustrating.
