Moving from one server to another - RMS

Last night something happened with my dedicated server. Dont know exactly what, but the server provider is moving everything over to a new server for me.

Here's my dillemma. I originally started with dolphin 7.0.6 - I think it was - and installed the RMS that was current at that time. To date, I have not upgraded or made any changes to the RMS and all has been working without incident - even though I am now using 7.1.1.

Once everything gets moved to the new server, the server provider says everything will work just as it did before and there will be no notice of any changes other than the server running faster. I got my original server 4 years ago, so they decided that switching to a new server would be more beneficial than trying to figure out what happened to the original one.

My question - to those with dedicated servers is: how true is that statement. I am concerned most specifically about the RMS. I know there is a newer version, and really wondering if I am going to have to install the newer version.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am concerned most specifically about the RMS.

If your using 7.1.x, RMS upgrade is highly recommended!

All should be fine as long as the permissions remain the same; and you manually clear your cache folders once the move is done.

I just seen this, the new RMS will allow video commenting, it also just seems faster.

thanks Newton - been with this server company since I started and I have only had one issue about 3 years ago. Customer support and everything else is great and I wouldnt trade them for anything else in the world. But my own concerns were bothering me in regards to that RMS.

Is there an upgrade for the RMS or do I need to completely uninstall the original and reinstall the new one?

Just do a re-install and follow the installation article: http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/RayMediaServerInstallation

Nathan is right, it is very easy to replace.

But my own concerns were bothering me in regards to that RMS.

Sorry for delay, got bored and went fishing.

One of the things i do for a living and have been for many years part time is repair computers.

At the rate technology is currently advancing, and if this issue is some kind of hardware failure then yes, moving to a new server would be best. Trying to repair a 4 year old computer and keep it running like before may not be easy. If the motherboard is at fault and a close match cannot be found the replacement can wreak havoc on the operating system when trying to boot it back up.

Matching 4 year old hardware nowadays is not as easy as it used to be.

Well, just got off the phone with the server company. I managed to catch them in time to tell them that I just want them to upload the domain files and the database, nothing else. This way, I can do a fresh install of the RMS. I feel more comfortable with fresh installs as opposed to overwriting and updating, but thats just me.

@deanos - I requested a new server a few months ago, because our current one was old, and we didnt notice that when we got hacked 3 years ago, the hacker also left pages that had links to porno sites. Considering this server is being used to store personal information, well, let's just say those two topics dont go well together - in most cases.

@newton and @nathan - thank you for your time in answering my question. Had they already moved everything over, I would have applied your suggestions.
