Member View - advice on how to compact it

As lovely as v7.1.3 is, I have to admit that it all seems a little bit too spread out. One of the things I preferred in v7.0.9 was the way the latest member view was more compact and took up much less space on my homepage.  In v7.0.9 the latest members appeared on the homepage as two neat and compact, horizontal rows of 8 individual photos with only their username underneath it.

Does anyone know the best way to achieve this again in v7.1.3?

I seem to recall some topics on here about this.  Try searching the forums here or using google/bing etc. and see if you can find them.
