I have no idea but maybe this is another area of Dolphin where we need to go looking for an open source listserv to replace it.  All that is needed is for the listserv to tie into the Dolphin database and retrieve the list of users that have agreed to receive the newsletter; which by the way should have an independent checkbox from site notifications.

Dolphin is not open source; not in the true nature of the open source community, it is what I like to call open code.  If Dolphin was truly open source; and that would open it to forking, then Dolphin could include third party open source applications.  It can not because it is licensed software and that prevents it.  I think Boonex would have made more money if Dolphin was open source and they sold support; real support, instead of licensing to remove branding and nag screens.

In fact, as I look at the mass mailer, I see it is a rather clunky listserv.  If one goes out and search, they can find some nice listserv/newsletter application that are open source.  The first time I tried the Dolphin Mass Mailer, I created a test newsletter and then look for the fields as to when to send it out.  Then I notice the drop-drop thing under the newsletter editor.  Most listserv will allow one to create a newsletter and then set send dates and other options.  It appears that if one is really going to use newsletters on their site, they need to look outside of Dolphin.  For example, what if I want the newsletter to be sent out to all my female members because the newsletter is only pertinent to them; that should be easy enough to do since gender of my members are stored; this could be extended to other profile attributes as well.

Looking in the market I see a few that work to improve the situation.  Dolphin Jay has a mass mailer replacement: http://www.boonex.com/m/dt-mass-mailer-2011-06-23 but I don't see where one can send out to certain members and/or other profile attributes.  Globalweb has this replacement: http://www.boonex.com/m/dolphin-email-marketer-pro-send-unlimited-emails

The Mass Mailer is controlled by your Cron Job. Stating that it 'sometimes works and sometimes doesn't' is hard to diagnose. Either cron job is kicking off or it isn't.

If all of the parameters are set properly, then your mass mailer should run everytime you tell it to. Note: If you have 100s or 1000s of emails to send, it may take a while as it will only send a handful at a time.

Another way of telling if your cron job is setup properly is to upload a video (not an embed) and see if it goes through the conversion process completely.

Thank you all for the help and advise. I will look and view all options, and make i guess the best decision for me. Zarcon honestly i send out like maybe 34 at a time once in a blue and nothing goes through, as for the video they upload pretty fast and no issue. I do have the VPS and as for hosting honestly we all have our opinions but i can honestly say my hosting has been very good to me. It might just be the default mass mailer who knows. So maybe its what you mentioned regarding the handful amount being sent out :/, but i will need to invest on one of the mods mentioned here. GG thank you so much, pplaut same to you bro.

Its not a hosting issue at all, it just the way Dolphin works. There is also the SMTP Mailer thats available in Dolphin but I have not used it before.

SMTP Mailer

Use any external SMTP server or service to handle Dolphin site email notifications

SMTP mailer:

If some of the emails go out and some don't, then it could be related to your email server in that your VPS host may have some sort of limits in the mail server controlling flooding.  If you have an independent mail server that you control... I am not sure how VPSes are configure in regard to this.

What the SMTP mailer does is allow you to use an external mail server and when you do that, you will again be up against what the administrators of that mail server have set up and you may find your account locked if you try to send too many messages too soon; the anti-flooding thing and anti-spamming thing that most mail server admins will have in place.

As a side note... I have the smtp mailer installed and configured correctly. Does this mean now that the mass mailer is now by default using the smtp mailer? I never really saw any way to "turn it on" after configuring...

Thanks!

Three cheers for Dolphin documentation LOL.  Good question but I don't have an answer as I am using sendmail but may switch to Postfix since I now have an understanding of it where sendmail is a puzzle to me.  Sendmail is working by magic, not because I knew how to set up the configuration LOL.
