Mass Mailer get site put on Black Lists

IP Address 216.246.35.229 is listed in the CBL. It appears to be infected with a spam sending trojan, proxy or some other form of botnet.

It was last detected at 2014-02-10 15:00 GMT (+/- 30 minutes), approximately 4 days, 5 hours, 30 minutes ago.

Is there any work around other than using a "mail service" ? Just about all of my messages now are blocked by most providers..

Thanks!

There are things you can do and impliment to authenticate your mail going out and in-turn tell providers your mail is legit and not spam ...

Somethings that will help:-

DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) and SPF

have you checked your server is virus free ? Also, check you do not have thousands of mail queuing up etc!

you can use http://cbl.abuseat.org/ to check if indeed your IP is marked ..

If Yes, you can then request to have your IP removed from Blacklist .

It should take no more than an hour or two before all servers that use the CBL / mail servers to notice the removal and in-turn your mail will be unblocked / not go to spam folders etc due to CBL. (hopefully).

When your mail is authenticated and signed for, you will not (should not) face issues ...

One of my own sites sends out well over 50,000 mails per week ....  sometimes 15K + per day and all mail hits members inbox even with gmail.

Mass Mailer is not the issue but rather whether your mail seems to be legit / trusted by providers (and not spam) and taking certain steps will help you with this.

Some mail servers will also reject mail if they can not do a reverse DNS lookup.  You will need to contact the provider of the ip address; and of course you need to be on a dedicated ip address just for your site; if you are on shared hosting you can contact your hosting company about a dedicated ip address for your site, and get them to set up a rDNS entry for that ip address.

Thanks all!

I did contact my hosting company and they started getting me off black lists.

I believe SPF is set up correctly but need to get DKIM working.

btw- i knew it was not mass mailer that was responsible for getting me black listed.

Detective08- you mentioned "when your mail is authenticated and signed for" is there anything besides DKIM and SPF?

Geek Girl -checking reverse dns now... :) I have a static ip address.. :)

Thanks again.

Did you run your IP against CBL and request removal ?? ...

Some other tips that can help you stop being blacklisted and, or mail sent to junk folder:-

1) At footer of emails add link etc that tells the receiver they can unsubscribe from getting the mail if they require

2) Make sure the Sender is same domain as where mail is coming from (like HL pointed out).

3) Avoid using words in emails like Porn, Money, Free, etc etc ...

4) Don’t ever use UPPERCASE for any words whether its in your subject line or body ... those are flags for spamming.

5) Try to limit the amount of links actually within the mail going out.

Also take a look about DMARC here: http://www.dmarc.org/

It is ironic that this thread discusses the Mass emailer being labeled a spam sending trojan.  Since the mass emailer is an automated process that sends out thousands of emails without human assistance, it is indeed a spammer.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

OK, you do have a good point; but still I suspect this is not the reason the domain / IP is blacklisted.

Agree... a dedicated IP and a correctly configured reverse DNS has definitely helped me.  My most active site sends about a thousand emails a week... sometimes twice that number... less than 1% are bounced back by receiving mail servers.

It's also important to look at what you're sending out too, i.e. some types of content will raise "red flags" with certain email services such as Gmail... too many "red flags" and they may block all emails for a while.

gmail + important mail = spam folder

same with hotmail ....

I do find it incredible though that HUGE companies like BIG G with all their tech cannot define between real genuine mail and fake mail ...

I have seen the best setups with all right configuration in place still get their important mail rejected all together or sent directly to spam folders.

Domain reputation is also a pretty big factor which I have not seen anyone mention yet.

Well, nothing like getting blacklisted to ruin your domain name.. lol

I can always use a third party mailing service... for the important newsletters...

But the daily alerts... sigh...

Is it the domain or the ip?  A lot of the blacklist organisations will blacklist a whole block of ip addresses.  My host email has gotten on blacklists  simply because the ip got included in a block of addresses they block.  These companies set their self up without any authority and then sell their blacklist service to others.  There is no regulation of them.  They can block willy nilly without repercussions.  Maybe if we get some sort of open internet in place then maybe we can go after these companies blocking legitimate emails.

SO BACK TO THE INITIAL QUESTION:

Is there a way in Dolphin to specify using an external mail service like Sengrid.com instead of the local mail server.

My IP and Domain is not into any RBL list.  I have an SPF and all of that stuff.

However as mentioned in the thread it seems some other server in the same  IP range as mine have been spamming and the whole range is blocked.

Can I configure another mail server to use to send email confirmation messagesÉ

Can this be done

Thanks

Clement

That's what the SMTP Mailer module is for. It allows you to use any SMTP mail server that you have access to use.
