Join by invitation only!

Does this feature now work?  Please answer only if use it and or have tried it and have an answer either way.  A I think it is suppose to work like this or that is not really helpful!  I am also looking for the process!  I am very aware of the invite a friend but how does it work or not work from there!  Thank you I am running 7.1.2
