Is this spam?

I haven't actually launched my site but I have used the domain name in my email address. All of a sudden I have received about a dozen new members which have listed a foreign country in their profile. They have entered a unique description so it seems a person actually signed up. When I checked my google analytics, there is no data from outside the US.

Therefore, I must assume this is some kind of spam. But I can't figure out why they would do this. What can they get out if it?

Maybe they want to advertise their sweet new Air Jordan shoes and fashionable coats to your member base.

Sometimes they are looking for sites for referral spam to push the sites up in the rankings.

I figured it out. One of them uploaded 75 blogs with a porn video in each & a ton of keywords.

What a loser !

How can avoid this in the future? I don't really want to be over secure by having to approve every user. i know when I join something if I have to wait to get approved I get really aggravated with the site.

I don;t thin I have an email validation set up. Does that come with Dolphin? Would it help?

Make verification mandetory. There are modules in the market than can help with this. Include a question on the join form such as what is 2+2 that only a human can answer. Block the whole of china via ip address. Then subscribe to deanos spam prevetion module thingy.....
