Is it possible to just get speed boost from 7.0.3?

I have Dolphin 7.0 I was told that if I upgrade to 7.0.3 I will lose any mods and other work that was done to the site (besides the mods that came with Dolphin). Is this true? Is there a way to just get the speed and stability parts of upgrade from 7.0.3? If the answer is no, then how do older members that have 7.0.2 or less upgrade without losing all the work that was done on their sites?

Source code mods are what are lost during upgrades. Third party modules that don't require source code changes generally have updates provided by the developer.

It is to be expected that changes to the source code would be lost when doing a update. So those would have to be reapplied.

So to answer your question. You can't update without loosing something. Especially if you modified the code itself. And getting the speed boosts provided would require more work than simply reappliying your mods because getting it updated any other way would require manually applying the patches from the SVN library. And doing so would be a bad idea because that could prevent any future updates from working at all.

Doing the update the normal way is really the only viable option.

If you've made any custom modifications to files, then you may lose them during the update. The same can go for templates if you just modified the uni/ template to your likings. As for mods, you'll have to confirm with the developer that they're compatible with 7.0.3. If not, you can wait for them to update them.

One thing you can do is make a test install based on your live site and then perform an update. This will allow you to see what happens and if anything goes wrong, how you can fix it.

One more question, at this point should I just wait for Trident to come out? Is it worth going through all the trouble of upgrading and possibly losing a lot, then rebuild what I lost just to have the same thing happen when Trident is released?

I just love it when somebody says "should i upgrade or should i just wait "...

Truth is you have to just bite the bullet and upgrade, and expect to have some work on your hands, if you are waiting ( like me) for something that works without this endless upgrade, then fix it, then upgrade again then fix it, which never really fixes anything properly that the next update wont break, then you will be waiting forever...

All long standing members here know this..

Trident...... ah that mythical beast, hands on heart everybody, do you really expect that to work any better than the current Dolphins... 'Cos  i dont...

I still don't know why people are asking if they should wait for Trident. It's been made perfectly clear now that Trident (and any Trident-based releases) is  a long way down the road.
