not sure why but I would cerainly take a look at this following module:- This is possibly the best tool for banning and keeping trouble away and I use it myself for past 6 months!!
With this tool you can ban users for periods of time, or permanently using the username and, or IP etc...
Take a good look and read and you will see what I mean ;)
