How do you keep your homepage from being cluttered

I'm running into a problem with clutter on my homepage now that content is starting to get generated by my members. My question to everyone running an active site, what info do you keep on the homepage to entice new visitors to sign up yet not too much to give them a headache?

I think my biggest issue is trying to break out of the blocks. I like the look of the design box, but not having 12 of them on the homepage to showcase different items. Trying to think of a way to incorporate news & article blocks together etc to keep it a little more easy flowing. I threw in an image slider which I like, good way to draw attention to certain items but it is not dynamically updating with new content.

Anyone got any good examples?

Me personally, I only have 4 blocks on my homepage.. A small flash design describing things you can do at my site, Site Stats, A Join Form, and A Login Box.. For me if you want to see more, you need to join.

Having too much on one page will definitely steer your potential members in the opposite direction. It can be somewhat confusing to a new member when you clutter a single page too much. Keep it simple. Trying to 'show' potential members everything on the homepage (or a single page) may have a backlash affect. Just be creative and put yourself in their shoes.

Nothing to see here
