Help to put email count bubble in main menu inbox

Help required to put email count bubble from members menu    into  main menu inbox tab like so ..

Did anyone ever figure out how to approach this?  Seems like a useful feature.

I also want the old 7.0.9 block with inbox, outbox, compose.  The new 7.1 way of just an inbox button was not a smart move.
