Grab members latest known location

Is it possible to grab a members latest location ( city ) and use it in posts? 

Can a fish swim?

Why does nobody uses this in Dolphin if it's possible? I think it's a great addition to a social networking site.

Here's a free service with IP databases which have API that returns the location of an IP address (country, region, city, zipcode, latitude, longitude) and the associated timezone in XML format. Just parse returned XML and use it everywhere you want.

You might want to ask your members if they want you grabbing their latest know location; a lot of people are concern about privacy, just look at the recent ruling in the EU against Google.  On my site we ban anyone that puts up any tracking info that shows the location of a member.  They can put up general visitor maps.  I guess it depends on the site but we are trying to keep our members secure.  Personally, I think a global law against GeoIP tracking needs to be put in place.  Just because I use the internet and have to have an IP address does not mean I want everyone on the internet knowing where I live.

GeoIP tracking is not 100% accurate. The location that is returned is the location of the internet provider that assigned you your current ip address. In many cases it is not even in the same town or city as you are. So it's useful only for getting an approximate location.

For example. I use it in my connect apps to get the country the new member is in because most connect api's don't return a country. A location more precise than that is not really reliable with a ip address.

The functionality to "grab" a location and use it in posts is not standard build in to Dolphin. The only module in the market that "grabs" someones location is my GEO Locator (http://www.boonex.com/m/geo-locator). It uses the "Location Aware Browsing" feature and falls back on GEO IP when L.A.B. is not available.

However, this is only half of what you need. To add the location to posts (not sure what you mean by that) will most likely involve some custom work... But it's possible!

 We use the Evo Wall module and want to add a members location to a post he / she makes on the wall.

The GEO Locator can "grab" the location and assume the Evo Wall needs a modification to include the location in posts.

Easy to add anywhere in dolphin where needed if you don't want to annoy users with alerts and popups about location tracking in their browsers. They are really precise and always up2date even for mobile IPs

The ability to do this is most urgent.  Without geolocation services, how will all your Dolphin site friends know that you're in line at Taco Bell waiting on some horse meat burritos?

Omg another one.... Pls stop promoting your mods in every thread. Your mod not even helps him half way. This is a support forum to help users, give them solutions, suggestions and approaches, so try give him a solution and stop talking 90% about the mods you want to sell every time. You not even know what he means. It's really annoying.
