Forums not working Please help.

My site is legendheartmusic.net and i just re-installed dolphin 7.0.9 for the sixth time. For a short while i was able to get my forums page working properly but when i had to recompile the language i was no longer able to add a new topic or new group. I've searched this site from top to bottom and cannot find any kind of solution. I've done everything from clear my cache to recompile the language.

I'd be happy to grant admin rights to anyone who thinks they can help me solve this problem.

Also, i've not installed any custom modules or templates ( except for Deanos Tools which allows me to have more than 1 admin) ... This is a completely virgin installation fresh from the zip file. I don't understand why the forums wouldn't be working.... I'll be checking this post multiple times a day for any response.

Announcement:

I partially fixed this problem by removing all instances of  [L[ ...... ]]  in ALL files under the folder:

modules/boonex/forum/

I downloaded a free program called Text Crawler that lets me search and replace text from multiple files and folders all at once.

I call it a partial fix because whenever I click on Compile Language:en the links in my forum go dead. I need to delete the template's recompiled folder in order to restore functionality ( in my case im using the default template for now which is called " uni "  so the recompiled folder that needs to be deleted is named " uni_en " )

The links in the forum section don't seem to work under Internet Explorer 9 but this is a Dolphin 7 issue as i've just now tried using the official dolphin 7 demo under IE9 and was met with the same exact results.

Link: http://demo.boonex.com/forum/

To anyone who wants to give my fix a try, here is a fresh copy of my forums module. As always be sure to make a backup of your modules/boonex/forum file via FTP before replacing it with my modified file.

NOTE: if you recompile your forums and the links go dead, delete the folder:  modules/boonex/forum/layout/uni_en   ( if you are using a custom template then it would be " template_en"

This fix is for Dolphin 7.0.9

Any feedback is very much appreciated.  Laughing

I could not reproduce this problem. I had a hard time believing that dead links for IE9 would go un-noticed for so long. Dolphin 7.0.9 has been out for quite a while now. So i decided to try it myself.

I tested the forums at http://demo.boonex.com/forum/ with IE9 on two separate computers and all links worked as expected. I did not have any problems.

You may want to look into a problem with your copy of IE9 or one of the addons you have in IE9

I apologize as i should have been more specific... New Topic and Post Reply are the links i was referring to that were dead in the live demo when using IE9. I just downloaded a fresh copy and tried it again but still those two links are dead. Also the Search Button in the forums section is also dead. Both on the live demo and my site as well under IE9.

Note: It is possible that i need to do a more thorough job of re-installing Internet Explorer since uninstalling it isn't as simple as going to programs under control panel. It seems to be tied into windows in a different manner. I will look into this to see if i can get a fresh clean install working. But if you could check the two links i listed above in bold for me using IE9 and the live demo that would be great. At least that will tell me its my system and not Dolphin that needs fixing.

I understand, and both of those links work for me on IE9.

IE9 (all versions in fact) are notorious for malfunctions. Especially on sites that utilize a lot of javascript. Those links are javascript links. They have a javascript action tied to them. Dolphin makes heavy use of javascript (jquery library).

Previous versions of IE did not have this, but IE9 (Maybe IE8 also) now has a reset in the advanced section of internet options which can fix most (but not all) problems with IE. Combine that with restore default settings and clearing cache and it may correct the problem.

And yea. Microsoft is stupid. The browser is actually part of the OS now. So it is really impossible to remove and reinstall.

Looks like it was just as you said. I did a full uninstall of IE8 and IE9 and re-installed IE9. All links including the search button that werent working before are now functional. Apparently my installation of IE9 has been compromised and there is no clear cut way for me to remedy this..... Its been long overdue but im gonna need to reinstall a fresh copy of windows 7 on my system.... I've been meaning to do that for a while but now i have good reason to.

Links in my forum still break whenever I recompile the language but i can easily fix it by deleting uni_en folder under modules/boonex/forum/layout . If you have any advice on that I'd much appreciate it. I've supplied a full copy of my forum module file in my previous post here in this thread. Im not sure how this little hickup will affect my being able to use any custom templates but i guess there's only 1 way to find out...

Reinstalling windows 7 will take a little time so i might not be back online for a little while.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out :) i very much appreciate it.

If it's now working on the demo site but not on yours, than you have some damaged files.

Could be damaged file in the jquery library, or a damaged file in the forum itself.

Start with this procedure.

1) Obtain a copy of a full dolphin zip file matching the version your running. I believe you mentioned you said you have tried reinstalls more than once. So obtain a fresh zip file. Don't use the one you have been using. Download with something other than IE.

2) Uninstall the forums.

3) Delete the modules/boonex/forum folder from the server.

4) Upload modules/boonex/forum from the zip file to the server using decent FTP client. Some people have had good luck with filezilla, but if thats the ftp client your using, i would find something else. I have seen to many reported problems with it to trust it.

5) Install forum module.

6) Compile and try again.

EDITED: I missed a few steps. Edited to include them.

Well, he did say he used an automated program to find and replace all occurrences of some characters...

deano92964,

I followed your suggestion and got the same results as when i first started. Im actually starting to believe the orca forum module for the current 7.0.9 download file is faulty. I am going to stick with my modified module as it   seem to work very much like the developers of the software had intended it to work. Thanks for the suggestions thoough, i do appreciate them :).

Unlikley. If it was faulty then more than a few dozen out of the thousands of people running dolphin would be having the same problem.

True. In anycase for those few dozen I've hopefully provided a temporary fix for them :)

deano,

Have you tried installing the most current version of dolphin recently? ( 7.0.9 ) If you happen to do a test installation, check to see if the following links in your orca forum go dead after clicking Compile Language:en :

  • New Post
  • Post Reply
  • Submit (in Search)
  • New Group (in Manage Forums)
  • Compile Language:en (in Manage Forums)

I would be very surprised if they didn't go dead.

Nathan Paton,

Let me give you an example of what i did Nathan. This piece of code is from the file: modules\boonex\forum\classes\forum.php

return $this->getXxxTopicsXML ($wp, '[L[Hidden Topics]]', '[L[Hidden topics]]', 'getHiddenTopics');

I simply used a free program called Text Crawler to find and remove the parts in red, as they should not be there. I'm not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination...however i know a text string when i see one. Tongue Out

I hope that answers your question.

EDIT:

Actually i just realized what the [L[...]] text could actually be for...... i think they are used by javascript in order to recompile language ... That would make the most sense. Seems like it could be a javascript issue... but even if it is, its server side since my site is hosted. ARRGG too confusing lol.
