Force avatars or not on join form?

We all have discussed at one point or another about the join form and getting the members to upload an avatar/profile photo.

Back during 7.0.x Zarcon came up with an excellent fix that I applied to a 7.0.x site long ago forcing the photo on the join process.

All along I was thinking how cool this was, now I can make my new members upload a photo no matter, and it works for sure.

When I upgraded the site to 7.1.x the forcing of the avatar/photo carried over to my surprise, trying to apply the fix to a "new" 7.1.x site does not.

Why am I discussing this you might be wondering about now...

I decided to test on most popular site that I applied the mandantory photo on someones "tablet."

To my horror on a tablet, uploading of photos is "disabled" I didn't know this because I have never tested on one.

Now this takes me back to why I was noticing how many of my join.php page hits were not finished, I went a bit deeper to look; it's because they were using a tablet or phone of some type. This is very discouraging and my site has to have an avatar/photo to join, so now I will be forced to allow signup's without a photo.

Looking at this one site, 25% of the total users are mobile.

How will we be able to get around this? You see one fourth of my users are not using a PC.

I first noticed this back when I tried loading the WAP module. At the time, the only way I could get around it was to install Opera Mini (as stated in the article Deano provided).  If it is any help, I was using an Android device.

Like I know what to do with that... lol

Here comes the stupid shit:

Where does that go?

Can that be implemented on Dolphin?

I'm even more confused now!

Reading the article, the only thing that jumps out to me is this...

Android devices running OS 1.0-2.2

As the device I'm using is very old Android Cruz Reader R105, a very old Android OS.

If I had access to a "new" tablet; can I upload photos with it being something like Gingerbread?

Gingerbread goes from ver 2.3 - 2.3.7 and was released in 2010 and faded in Sept 2011. So I wouldn't technically call that new, although may ne 'newer' that what you are using. The issue I found out was that the 'browser' did not have the ability to 'browse' your folders/galleries. OperaMini did have that ability thus alowing you to upload content using a 'browse' button.

I can vouch that on Android 4.1.2 (Jellybean), I have no problems with the upload feature using the default browser.

 Ok, cool. Thanks.

My phone I think has Ginger, the Cruz tablet is very old browser, I don't even think I can put Opera on it. I bought it for $25 just for testing purposes, what a waste of money.

I did confirm that upload bug was fixed in Froyo version 2.2. So if you have Gingerbread (2.3-2.37), you should be able to upload using your default browser without any problems.
