Editing WEIRD and standard image WHITE spaces

.

Searched high and low in the 6.1 forum but couldn't find the answers. Transpareny won't resolve most of these issues because I need to be able to implement color changes.

.

Here's what I'm talking about:

.

I've changed the overall appearance of my main homepage menu items. Would like them to be a bit taller too and can't find where to adjust that. I can get to that later though. More important are my issues with white spaces. Take a look at this screenshot please:

.

I have three issues with three different white spaces that show up on the homepage of the community.

No matter what I adjust or where I look, I can't find the file or image that would enable me to remove those weird white vertical spaces which show up in the main menu, between the text buttons. I also can't locate the file/location which would enable me to adjust the colors (would prefer colors, not transparency) of the two different whites within photos of the member section. It looks abominable, the way that it is right now.

.

For one, there's the background of the image itself which should certainly be transparent to say the last, but then there's also the border around that same image, left ... right ... bottom ... and I sure would like to make that some type of a color that goes well with the colors/hues that are already being used. I'm sure that some of you template gurus can help me, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
