Hi all. I'm getting a little flustered with dolphin because I'm beginning to think that I blew 100 bucks for a package that looks mighty fancy on the outside ... with little to nothing on the inside ... ??? For example, not even basic email is available, which we already offer on our site, embedded within our own contact manager, our greeting card system, our scheduler system, our webmail system (all different programms, unrelated to dolphin).
I've been online for 16+ years and to me EMAIL and internal MESSAGING has never been the same thing. So when I saw this in the admin panel:
Screenshot one (click here):
I left everything unlimited in order to test those cool "email" capabilities ...
Screenshot two (click here):
Tried sending an email to another email recipient, internally to me, and both ...
Screenshot three (click here):
But received error when trying to send as standard email, or internally.
Is it supposed to work that way? You can only send messages internally, to members only, like on eBay? If so, then that seriously sucks (hate the eBay messaging system too) because there's no doubt that that is a barrier to many people, not to mention the fact that such limitations inhibit the freedom to communicate ... freely ... substantially ... within something that I'd like to treat/view as a real "community" platform.
Does anyone know how I can make this work for regular email too, if possible without additional costs since everything that we offer is free of charge and we're not making a dime on anything. Thanks a bunch for any help on this.

You must use member NickName so the script knows who you want by looking in profiles, with this info the script can now send to the email that the member inserted.
When you select "send to personal email" the text you entered will get sent to the email the Member provided in the join form/edit profile form
If all you know is their email simply search out their Nickname /ID

somethings amiss, out of the box, this thing emails both places if you select it.
Thanks, but ....
The email that I tried to send off was to a non-member account, in other words just a plain ol' test email to someone who has nothing to do with dolphin at all. Then, when I tried to email to a registered member, the only member that I could use, was .... myself, since I just set up a single membership for testing purposes before making everything public.
.
So are you saying that "out of the box" I should be able to email anyone anywhere at any time (as long as I'm logged in)?
Because if so, then yes, something is definitely amiss.

I really don't get why you would even want to do that. Why not just use your regular email program? |

Well, crazy as it may sound, but our thinking is that if our future members like the community as much as we would like them to, then they'll practically end up spending most if not all of their online time there. And in that case, it would be very practical indeed to take care of all of your emailing directly from within the community ... even to friends, family, or business associates who aren't a part of the community (yet).
.
Here in germany, webmail is more popular than anything else (we have that too, but not integrated into dolphin of course). We're trying to get people away from the "crappy part of the web" with its advertising, and mailbox limits, and unproductive pages, and lousy searches, and expensive areas that we offer for free, and senior UNfriendly pages, etc. etc. etc. Everything that we provide is free of charge, so yeah, I could see it in the future .... people just hanging out in our community about 90% or more of the time ... while still having the need to ommunicate with others though ....
.
Yeah, I know, nuts, isn't it?

The first screen shot of the email funtion is not the way it works, this is for members and if you have this set to allow members to get other peoples email, what happens when they go to a persons profile and click on that action of get members email, then it sends that persons email to your email. so now you have that members email address sitting in your inbox.....
What!!!
Needless to say i have this turned off, talk about a breach in privacy, but thats another story, but this is what that funtion is for in your screen shot

Okay, so based on my screenshot, if I were to set the number of allowed actions to only ONE with a reset of 24 hours, then a member could attempt to contact another member by sending them an email via dolphin once per day only, right? I see nothing wrong with that at all ... espcially since people who collect emails will more than likely not join the system in the first place, but even if they do, they're not goig to be interested in collecting 365 email addreses in one year (one per day).

well yes and no. If you set it up to 1 in 24 hours, then a member can only get the other members email once every 24 hours, but they dont contact them through dolphin no, the email goes to their email they signed up with (hotmail, gmail etc) and then they can do whatever they want then with that email addy without the member even realising that the other people have their private email address.
This system is really bad for a dating site or adult site, can only imagine the stalking and abuse that would happen to members who signed up believing their email was private and for them to decide who they give it out to or not, if the admin dont realise this is what that action does, and to my mind is a major breach in privacy and security for members.
If you have a different sort of site though, and you make it clear that all private emails are obtainable by any member, then i guess thats ok, but i just dont like it at all. It's up to us on dating sites to protect peoples privacy and security, and not let any old tom dick and harry get their private emails IMHO

The feature you're referring to in this post is used for obtaining the signup e-mail of other members. So lets say that if tyke, you, and I were members of your community and you had those limits above set. I would be able to go to tyke's profile and use the "get members email" feature and the dolphin system would send me an e-mail with tyke's e-mail of "tyke@example.com." Since you have that feature limited to 1 every 24 hours, if I were to go directly to your profile afterwards I would not be able to obtain your e-mail in this way. Does that clarify?

Yes thats spot on, if you were to go to my profile or any other profile on my board at least, you cannot see the members sign up email,(nor should you) but if i had this action "get members emails" turned on, you could click on that action in my profile, then get my email to do with what you wanted without me knowing.
I for one, would not like to think that any member could if they wished obtain my private email, if i was just an ordinary member, and then email me when i didnt want them to, and on a dating site, where you have women, with men, well, lets just say, "being men" i'm sure my women members would leave in a flash if they though their email was open to all other members in this way.
This really isnt a good feature to be honest, and im glad i tested my site before i went live to see what each action did, or i would have felt really bad if one of my women members had got harrassed because of this.

You can turn this feature off by clicking "anonymous mode" in advanced options. I read another post on here that states if you don't turn it off then members can also access the file directly and get anyones email address regardless of how you have the member levels setup. Freaky.. |

I agree that this is a dangerous feature. I changed the e-mail template so that it sends out an e-mail saying that our site does not support that feature because I dont know how to fully disable it. Idk why they would include a feature like that really....

Well, That makes me think that the 1 per 24 hour cycle setting would be a good way to go.
Reason being is this: First of all, WHY would you let any non-member see another members profile in the first place? ANSWER: You wouldn't, for numerous reasons, including the fact that you want more members to sign up anyway, and not just LOOK at everything without being a member. This said, a signed up member already has to be a little careful about "exploiting" another person or their email addresse, for fear of having complaints against him or her lodged ... causing the abusive member to lose their account immediately.
.
Secondly, you may be right from a dating point of view, but I tell you what .... I just recently found an old friend of mine through an online community, someone that I hadn't been in touch with for over 20 years. Both of us were pleasantly surprised when I was able to sign up and then use the email system in order to establish contact. That's a super benefit, one that may definitely be handy if you're looking to run your community for the next 10+ years with "zillions" of members.
.
Thirdly, in this day and age with hundreds of freemail servers, it's a snap to change your email addresse if you really need to go that far. Let all of your contacts know about the change ... wait 30 days ... and then simply stop using that older email addresse. It would be far worse if, by requesting an email addresse, the "bad person" was also able to obtain street addresse, phone number, and other more sensitive personal information. But as long as it is strictly an email addresse, it's not that big of a deal. I'm sure that at least 99.9% of all people wouldn't behave in such an abusive manner and the email option does have it's good things about it too.

Well in an ideal world, we would all be lovely to each other, respect one another, but sadly thats not the way of the world these days. I remember years ago now, i was on a friendship site and they had this function, this was a PG rating site, just friends talking, a bit of flirting. until one day one of the nicer members, an oldish woman just left. Later some close friends of her on the site had found out that this function had been used to get her email, and this member had used it to send pornography of himself to her, left her in a right state. although the member got banned, it didnt stop the upset of this poor women.
There really is no need for this function, there are PM if you want to contact a member, also site emails, where you can email any member without getting their details, these are good enough for building friendships.
As for disposable emails, you are right, it's easy to get any email to use to sign up, but on the whole, a member who is genuine, tends to sign up with an email that they use for many things, that they have had for a long time, so unless you state in the sign up process, "warning, your email will be available to all other members" it doesnt really give them a fair chance to get a disposable one. Even though members can only see the content of my dolphin, it only takes one to abuse the system. Just the otherday on here i got a message(from a member, some lovely sexy lady) asking me to give her my email so she could send me nice pictures of herself and so we could talk more. Now if this spammer could get my email just from a click of a button, id now have my years old email being spammed, and god knows what.
To turn this function off completely, although the action button will still be displayed, just go into the membership levels and make sure that no level of membership has this action enabled. They can click it if they want and it just displays a box saying "sorry, your membership level does not allow you this function".
Its much safer in the long run i feel.

Also, I would change the e-mail template so that if someone somehow did gain access (Idk how they would) the e-mail they received would not include any details. This is a good way if you don't use paid membership levels.
