Is it possible to have two different domains with Dolphin 7 that use the same database?
Is it possible to have two different domains with Dolphin 7 that use the same database? caredesign.net |
Yes
Back to pulling my hair out! (ouch, ouch, ouch) |
now, my original thought is to just upload a new Dolphin to the second domain, and use the same database settings on install. Is it that simple??? caredesign.net |
now, my original thought is to just upload a new Dolphin to the second domain, and use the same database settings on install. Is it that simple??? I've never tried something like this, but you should be able to do this by simply changing the address and path information in your /inc/header.inc.php file. There could be more technicalities that I'm unaware of. BoonEx Certified Host: Zarconia.net - Fully Supported Shared and Dedicated for Dolphin |
First off, thank you both for your responses. Let me explain what i am trying to do and see if there may be another way to do it. Without getting into all the specifics, there are 3 user types and 3 current sites. All of the sites feed off of two Databases, but to make it simple, I can work with just one. Each of the sites are individual in their purpose. DIfferent layouts, different styling, etc. I really love the functionality of Dolphin and I have already converted one of the sites to Dolphin 7. Now, I want to convert the other two, but as stated before, all of the original sites feed off of two databases, but i could get away with only one.
I hope this gives a better perspective. caredesign.net |
Yes
So what you will do with some media files? Like as members thumbnail, ads photos, ....... PS: If possible do not write me personally, please try to ask on the forum first |
You may want to check this mod http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/Cross_Database_Profile_Synchronization, although it doesn't use a single database, it synchronized profiles on all sites. If a user joined on 1 site, they'll be on the others sites as well. If a user updates their avatar or profile on 1 site, reflects on other sites too. Works even dolphin sites have different profile fields. Now, if you want to synch media files or site contents I can do that too. Unlock Your Future |
I installed Dolphin 7 on the second domain and used the original database variables during the install. As I thought, it created all tables from scratch. So I restored the backup, and the main site does not display, but I can access the Admin area of the second domain. Scriptologist, your solution would be great, but the price tag is more than we can budget for. Sasha, the media files are another issue. I still need all three domains to be able to access the video files and make purchases. Which is another reason why i wanted to use the existing database. so I would not have to upload all of the files again.

scriptologist, this can sync as many sites as I want so long as all on the same server? |
Yes, that's correct. Unlock Your Future |
scriptologist - how does your mod affect the videos and images that a user may place on one site, since the files are saved to a location dependent on that domain name??? From what I see so far, your mod would work for the basis of what I need. and thinking about it, i may just have to re-upload video files to the new domain. caredesign.net |
magnussofy - the one thing that I did notice is that in the sys_options table, there is info specific to the domain that i install Dolphin on. So, my next thought would be - how could I create a sys_options2 table for the 2nd domain to read from, and how would i get the second site to read from there. caredesign.net |
Scriptologist, I really like the fundamentals of your mod, but I am still stuck with the price tag being out of budget, so I would like to ask this: is there a way to Set up a cron job that copies all info from one db to another. caredesign.net |
the mod will trigger site activities of the user, if the user uploads a photo then it would reflect on other domain, renaming the photo of course since the unique id would be different on that other domain's table. A cron job won't be necessary since there's a synchronize button that you can just click to sync all the sites that you want, and the site activities are done on real time. Unlock Your Future |
scriptologist - i will speak with the client and see if he would like to purchase this mod. It sounds exactly like what we need, so the cost would be cheaper than the time. caredesign.net |
