Working on a few things at the moment using Dolphin where I work, looking at an internal business network rather than external social network setup.
A couple of key features I would like to include, although I don't think will be using regular Dolphin modules...
Just wandering if anyone has approached these things and how they got on!
1 - Decent, secure File Sharing. Need to be able to upload a file to private folder, and send an invite to someone to dload it. Ideally, be notified when they do. Thinking wetransfer.com but most likely using 'Files' module...
found a module that seems part of the way there - http://www.boonex.com/m/Private_File_Plus
2 - Some sort of 'shared project boards' (but not whiteboards!)
I love trello.com ... if only Dolphin had something like this! with board sharing etc... or trello within a group...
Anyone looked at this and found something that works?

Have you seen this: http://www.boonex.com/m/documents-for-dolphin-7-1

You're almost describing Owncloud. http://owncloud.org/
Currently, there's no integration with Dolphin available.... I'd be a customer if there was.
Another thing to think about is MoxieManager that will be included with the next version of Dolphin Pro, MoxieManager can interface with Azure, GoogleDrive, AmazonS3 and DropBox.
MoxieManager is usually thought of as a TinyMCE plugin, but it operates as a standalone file manager as well. It is not restricted for use with TinyMCE. The addition of MoxieManager to Dolphin, opens the door to some interesting possibilities.

Cheers for that, will take a good look at owncloud...
the Scribd integration looks halfway there, a little slow to load on the demo.
What I would love to see if something more like Trello.com, where users can by invitation, access a projects work boards, and get involved with adding, editing content etc rather than just viewing a presented doc and leaving comments.
Trello has a great 'app feel' that makes it really user friendly also,
the 'feel' of how a module works within dolphin is something I think really needs attention, as the 'app revolution' is changing expectations for end users these days..

Trello strikes me as a little mundane. If all you need to do is make to-do lists, I suppose it's OK. Most projects that I've ever been involved with, needed management tools with more sophistication. In Trello's defense, it is only billed as a project organizer... not a project manager.

Not sure I could get on board with that scenario. I guess I'm old school where one, and only one person needs to be in charge. Giving a group of people the authority to add and edit content can quickly create chaos. There's a good reason for users being limited to 'just viewing and commenting'.... one person leads, and the others follow.
Using project management tools has always been something that bored me to tears. It has always been a task I was willing to let someone else do whenever possible. PC versions of project management tools have always been boring, and from what I've seen of the web based counterparts, they are excruciatingly boring. I have never known anyone that enjoyed using such tools. In the corporate world I know, the use of project management tools is allocated to the person least likely to benefit the project by doing actual work, therefore he/she becomes the project manager. As project manager, they are responsible for creating endless Gantt charts and telling upper management what they want to hear.... none of it bearing any resemblance of what is actually happening amongst the people actually working on the project.

Trello is simple but simple works for most!
lacking in allowing multimedia to be displayed though.
What if we had a 'group timeline' (which is available on market) but one that allowed 'posts' to be re-positioned using ajax drag n drop... that would be an interesting solution! would pretty much be a fully fledged shared project module.

It does have a certain appeal in that it doesn't immediately bore me like most project management tools I have encountered. It would be nice to have popup viewers for attached documents for common business docs... MS Office, pdf, Autocad, etc. Thumbnails of media with popup viewers. Task linking/ dependent tasks would be a must-have. For tasks with a deadline, a countdown timer on each would be nice. I can think of dozens of little features I'd need before I'd ever want to deploy a web app.

After some digging around, I came across something simple that I might have uses for:
https://duetapp.com/demo/
It's not free, but $49 is very reasonable. It doesn't have the sophistication of most corporate class project managers, so it's not for heavy duty use. Using one of those corporate class project managers usually makes me want to kill myself immediately. I didn't get that feeling when using the duetapp demo. That's a big positive, even though it has severe limitations. From my perspective it comes down to two choices. One... use a powerful PC based project manager that bores me to tears and drives me insane, or Two.. use a project manager like Duetapp that barely functions but is fun to use. It's a tough choice.
There's a free, single user version: http://www.getsoloapp.com/demo/

Looks quite interesting, slightly more to it than trello.
My dilemma is Im aiming my use at 'non tech users' who are really just wanting to view something thats going on without having to think!...
I may look at modifying groups, with group 'timeline / wall' being used as a task board.
I have the wall generator module that puts a timeline within a group, if it could put on within an article within a group, then multiple walls / timelines could be added within a single group (project)
add to this some sort of ajax drag and drop for re-ordering timeline posts and you have a basic project management module...
would be a start anyway. I would like it to work within Dolphin rather than embedding an external app into iframe as you never really get the full experience doing that and often end up leaving the dolphin site.

You just described 99% of all corporate project managers. Perhaps I need to reevaluate my thinking on this whole topic.

This looks promising: http://taskboard.matthewross.me/
There's no installation for the default package... just upload and use. By default it uses a sqlite database, but it's easy to connect it to a mysql db. It does require php 5.4 or higher.

Does look interesting.
I guess something like this can easily be iframed, although integration with membership actions would be needed for privacy and for tracking project actions
