Default Privacy Group explanation needed

Could someone explain how the Default Privacy Group in Privacy Settings works (see attached)?

Tool tip help text:

When you post content you can choose "default" privacy group and then change the "default" value anytime. Thus, you can start posting for your friends only, and later, for example, open everything for all members or even go public. Define "default" value here and choose "default" when posting content to have this global control.

Thanks!

Each user can set their own default privacy group for each module in their dashboard (On the top menu, hover over 'Dashboard' or the dashboard icon, then click on "Privacy Settings") . You'll see the options there on the drop down menus. Whatever is set there is the "default" for that member and that module (they can vary both by member and by module). I'm not sure what Dolphin sets as that default field before the user sets it, or if it also varies - but the ones' I've edited were all set to "Public" by default.

Your default choices are Public, Members, Friends. You can add more options w/ the free Extra Privacy mod.

Thanks very much for your response. Starting to make sense now.

Couple of questions:

  • How does the Default Privacy Group setting (see attached image) affect the Default Values settings for each module shown below?
  • Also, are settings made by the admin in this section applied to all users (if they're not changed by the users themselves)?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about this, but my understanding of it is that the Default Privacy Group covers everything in general, while the Default values allow for further  customization of each section. (A bit like how a css sheet will cover everything that points to it, but you can set different css values in a particular page that will override the default css).

The changes that an admin  makes apply to their account only - on the user side of the site (as opposed to the admin panel side), the admin's acct functions as their member account. Changes that you make in Settings>Privacy Groups on the admin panel are the ones that are site-wide and they relate only to which options are available for choice, not for setting the users' privacy groups.

Again, thanks very much for your response. Shedding lots light on an area I couldn't make sense of.

But of course, this leads to more questions =):

  • To extend your CSS analogy a bit further, users can then change the privacy settings on each object they create (e.g., a group, an event, etc.) to apply settings different from those specified in their Default Values?
  • I'd like Privacy Settings to be the same for all users on the site, and have admin control them. As a result, I should remove Privacy Settings from the Dashboard? What privacy values will each object have that admin creates in this scenario  (e.g., a group, an event, etc.)?

Many thanks in advance!
