Remove it and replace it with something better.

I use this: http://www.boonex.com/m/logical-captcha

I often have to refresh captcha images a dozen times before I get one I can read. Even then, it's sometimes a guess.

I just use a simple checkbox tht says "Are you human" - that is a mandatory field. Or you can do something like a simple math question - what is 1 plus 1.

If you really want to make life hard for the spammer use a question that has something to do with whatever your site is about.

Sometime that even defeats legitimate users that didn't pay attention in school.  On a vBulletin site of mine, I was surprised at the number of people that couldn't answer the question, "What is the longest river in the United States?"

I don't use questions on the logical captcha. I ask them to unscramble letters and enter the word. Not only does it stop bots dead in their tracks, you can weed out complete dumbasses  by adjusting the difficulty the scrambled words.

Someone once told me that the simple maths question; along the lines of (3+4)*2, on my cms site would prevent some people from being able to leave comments.  My answer was if they are that uneducated, then I don't want them leaving comments.

Number sequences are good too, ie...

0, 1, 1, 3, 6, 9, 27, 32, 160, 167, 1169

Next number in sequence =

With software out there like XRumer. Normal graphical captchas are useless. It can solve most of the popular ones used like ReCaptcha, VBulletin-captcha, DLE-captcha, VKontakte, blah, ect, yippie. It also solves most math questions as well like what is 2+2. The newer versions even solve questions like "What is the color of grass" or "What is the capitol of China"

They just keep making the bots better and better. Makes me want to get a bat and start busting some heads.

I think simple math human questions will be next to be solved. I took a slightly different approach, I asked a question that any one of my site members knows instinctively but not a question that could be solved by even the most robust bot reader.

So far, it has worked flawlessly for some time now.

The question?

What is this site about?

The answer?

towing

I even provided the answer if the join failed in the little help popup....
