Can someone explain why you would sell a member contact information?

When someone signs up to my website they see this message by default once they have clicked on the activate link in their email.

I know I can edit this, but could someone explain to me the purchasing of someone's contact information. I don't understand why you would be selling members contact info? I Dolphin set up to do this?

I believe it to be a feature of the dating side of the software. You find someone you like, pay the site a fee and obtain the right to e-mail that user.

If this information isn't disclosed to user when they sign up with all of their personal information, could be a recipe for a lawsuit! Could also easily be misinterpreted as the site selling your contact information to 3rd parties, I think they should reword the default text. Maybe even disable it by default.

And also this is what Facebook does.

Dolphin allows site owner to sell members contact information. In the other hand, the script allows members to post anything including their contact information anywhere on the site...

Am I the only one to see here a big contradiction ???
