Alright, first I logged in as admin and cleared all cache completely. Then I went into advanced settings and disabled all caching options before making my new changes. The changes had to do with the default photo size on the index page which I reduced down to 112 X 112 as opposed to 140, and the amount of members shown, which I reduced down to only 7 so that only one full row of members would be displayed.
But when I went to check the index page nothing had changed. My browser cache is always disabled so I know that it doesn't have anything to do with the browser. Opened up another browser to check the site again, same problem as before ... still the original photo thumbnail size and still the previous amount of showing members. Any idea how I can clear whatever bits of cache may still be remaining? The settings themselves were changed successfully.
Also, somewhere on the forum there was a post about better & faster caching options in order to make the site perform better. Our server admin did apply those changes. Is this something that should *NOT* be applied until a site owner is 100% certain that nothing else will be changed on the site? I'd really appreciate some productive input which would help for me to see the changes that've been made. Thanks.

To hard clear cache, clear out the folders /cache/ and /cache_public and /tmp/ on your server. Leave the .htaccess files.
However reducing the thumbnail picture size will not change the size of old thumbnails, they are not created on the fly. They are created when a picture is uploaded (5 different thumbs are created actually). So if you have a bunch of old thumbs they will stay the old size unless you manually reduce the size and replace the old pictures. However, your new members will have thumbnail pictures at the new size.

Which i think is stupid BTW.
The origional image is all that would be needed and resized on the fly by code.
Just my 2 cents and my rant for the day.

I agree - resizing is a minimal overhead - unless you choose to view an entire gallery of 1000's of images, but then you are asking for trouble anyway (not sure what they put that link in there)

Thanks. Believe it or not ... but that didn't work ... ??? I cleared the cache manually, leaving only the htaccess. Afterwards the page still wouldn't change in my browser which already has the cache disabled. Then I checked on my wife's computer and nothing had changed there either after I cleared out the cache in her browser. Installed google chrome, still no change. This must have something to do with those other caching/compression options which were mentioned here on the forum in order to make the site faster. I'll get ahold of our server admin and ask them to look into it ...

I want to make sure we're not misunderstanding each other. If you made a change in the index photo size, this change WILL NOT affect existing photos, only newly uploaded photos.
What is the issue you are seeing, that the photos are too large or that you are displaying more than 7 users, and where are they showing?

Yes, I know about the existing image thumbnails not changing unless they're deleted and then replaced. That's why I changed the amount of members to be displayed to only 7 which would fill exactly one row ... but after clearing the cache manually there were still 8 members showing, just like before. It's not that big of a deal though since there are some more important issues that take precedence over this. Haven't heard from our server admin yet either, it's the middle of the night there ...

Can i ask, where do I need to go to change the default sttings for the size of public phots, sounds, videos, sites and groups on the home page?
I wish there was a simple guide to doing such basic changes as I see it ask numerous times in forums but no finite reply

Since this post is over 2 years old and the question you asked has absolutely nothing to do with the content in this thread, I would recommend going to the proper forum and starting a new post that specifically outlines your issue(s) http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |
