 Would it not make sense to make the creator of a new forum topic subscribed to it rather than relying on them clicking the 'Subscribe' link manually?
I notice this isn't even the case on the Boonex forums and it's a real pain remembering to click subscribe each time to ensure your are emailed when there are any replies.
