Hello! I'm going through serious
problems with my dolphin website... I have been tryed three different hosts and I'm having problems with CPU overload, I started an
account at a shared plan on TMD Hosting, And I was very happy with the support
and service of them, the team is very quick and attentive, but my account
was blocked twice by overloading the
server, they told me:
"Your website Has Caused overload on the server
and Was Limited From Our monitoring system. It Seems That a very large
number of MySQL queries executed simultaneously and this Were Caused the
overload.
I have now enabled the
website and removed the limit in September from the monitoring system. However It Seems That
this is not the first time your website is causing an overload. WE WILL collect
information for the queries executed Happen if the issue again and Will
Provide You with These in this or a new ticket. Note That if another
overload is Caused It May from your account permanently limited the get a
lot of complains received because of These Were Caused overloads from
scripts on your account.
If the account is limited
again the only option to have it reactivated Will Be on dedicated
package. "
I've also transfer my site to hostforweb
VPS server, and I was immensely disappointed, the service sucks ... Support sucks, my site
was not whether 1 day in the air without giving some kind of problem
...
I would like suggestions
and recommendations to my problem, as well I do not have money for a
dedicated hosting, and I believe that the size of my site does not require so much for use a dedicated account.
Below is a
detailed report regarding the last block of my account on TMD Hosting:
"Your account has caused number of overloads on the server and it is no
longer suitable for Shared Linux hosting package. The account consumed
way over the allowed resources stated on our ToS policy:
http://tmdhosting.com/terms.html
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 8230 leandro9 18 0 181m 27m 8052 S 46.5 0.2 0:00.26
/usr/bin/php /home/leandro9/public_html/modules/index.php 8233 leandro9 18 0 181m 27m 8052 S 44.7 0.2 0:00.25
/usr/bin/php /home/leandro9/public_html/modules/index.php 8242 leandro9 18 0 180m 27m 7964 R 44.7 0.2 0:00.25
/usr/bin/php /home/leandro9/public_html/flash/XML.php ....... 8243 leandro9 17 0 117m 17m 4648 R 28.6 0.1 0:00.16

/usr/bin/php /home/leandro9/public_html/modules/index.php
The processes initiated from the script you are using is consuming over
the allowed resources for our Shared Linux hosting packages and this is
causing overloads. As this is not the first time this issue has appeared
permanent limit is applied for the account and the http access will not
be restored unless the upgrades mentioned in the ticket with subject:
IMPORTANT: Server overload caused by your account
are completed. Note that the recommended package is a dedicated server:
http://tmdhosting.com/dedicated-servers.html
However you may use Premium VPS until the moment when the website grows
to a point when it will require separate hardware server to be hosted.
Note that there is no where to tell when the dedicated server upgrade
will become a must and that is why we recommend it instead of the VPS.
Considering the above please let us know how to assist you further."
Thank you so much!

Free RMS with some of the accounts.
Getting shut off for temepory spikes is crazy. Terabyte does not do that.

Hi leandro9000,
One of the serious problem with dolphin is its high resource usage. This actually started from version 6. The dolphin version 7 consumes a lot of resource. Even though there are many chache included in dolphin 7, the resource usage has gone up. A host that provides service for dolphin based websites has to monitor its server regularly(24/7) to check the load average.
We have a lot of clients at happy-hosting.com hosting dolphin packages on our servers. We directly suggest VPS for dolphin 7 and dolphin 6 based sites. Even some clients who cannot afford for more $$ come to us. What we do is, we do some modification in dolphin operation so that the load doesn't make much problems for other sites. One the site needs more resource, we directly ask them to take a VPS.
I have experience some sites in dolphin 7 needs more than a dedicated server(server with 2 x dual core processors, 4gb ram). For those clients, we split the database and webserver on different physical servers. For some clients, we have provided clustering and load balancing.
To be short, I recommend you to choose a VPS plan if you are starting now. If you are getting good hits, go for a dedicated server. When the hits increase further you have to go for a higher one.

Hi,
I know what you are talking about unlimited bandwindth and server space accounts but the hosting provider will limit your CPU usage to as little as 5% if on a share hosting plan even designed for dolphin.
Check your crons for frequency if your site isn't very large yet you can shrink your usage there that should prevent the lockouts...

Seems we have another advertising forum thread.
You need a hosting provider who provides Dolphin specific hosting.
Consider DolphinInstalls.com for your Dolphin & RMS hosting needs!
We will never cut you off for a little CPU usage...

My take on the situation. It is a serious problem full stop. Even DosDawg has complains about the XML.php spikes on his server from D7. You guys should not be offerring this Unity Member alternative webhosting. This is almost as bad as his current webhosting stating that he should upgrade to "Premium" VPS or dedicated hosting. You should really be helping him to solve his issue. An issue which lots of other Unity members have been having. Dolphin admittedly is a bit of a beast if you have any number of users active at any one time and if this is the case then you should seriously think about upgrading your server. However when DosDawg turns around and says that he gets CPU spikes with zero users you have to wonder what sort of server specification you really need to have to run a D7 website with a total of zero users. Also if one dolphin can max out a shared server's CPU at 100% it is also going to max out the CPU on a VPS or a dedicated server. Presumably a shared server is going to be alot more powerful in terms of resources than a VPS or "personal" dedicated server.
I personally suspect the simple messenger. I have a bad feeling about it. However you require users for this issue to exhibit itself, I would have
thought, so how this relates to DosDawgs problem I do not know. Uninstall any unnecessary modules and increase the latency of the simple messenger. About all I can suggest at the moment. Could it be some sort of deadlocking problem? In which case increasing the latency would not make any difference. Maybe I am on the wrong track. Hopefully Boonex will recognise this as a problem and look into it at some stage in the near future.

Agreed, definitely get a dolphin 7 hosting provider perhaps one of the hosts recommended by Boonex. I have one of those right now, but won't mention it here.

Erm... Who are you agreeing with since your last post? |
If D7 is unuseable due to a server load problem and the cron job is suspected of being the culprit, what functions would not work if the cron jobs are turned off? That is, if you aren't interested in the "cupid" and matching stuff for your site, would you lose anything by turning off the cron job or maybe setting it to run only once per day?
Thanks.
|
Cron handles a lot of things. To name a few off the top of my head.
Purges deleted messages Deleted virtual kisses expired profiles processing of video uploads. cleaning temp files from temp directory membership expire letters processing of queued mail.
There might be others, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Thank you Deano. I guess turning it off is not an option. Is it pretty safe to assume that if you are on a shared server, that D7 is not an option then? My version 6 runs fine, the last thing I need is to go through the whole update process just to end up having my host freeze my account. |
do remember you can change the cron timing to something different other then * * * * * try to set it every 15 minutes. i know some hosts will even boot your account if you try and use anything these then 15 minutes. keep in mind video will take that much longer to post on the site but it might take some stress of the server. Also i know that some hosts are quick to jump the gun on this as well. If i user comes to the site then closes the site before its done loading the sql server has no idea where to post back the information so it just hangs on to the process for a long time and does not die right away.
Then it looks like to the host that the site is using a lot of resources when really its not. even if the spike is for only 30 seconds in length they just look at it as to many resources in use from the report they see in whm. It does not give a length in time to as how long the spike really was and its just a way for them to up sell there services to you. Some hosts more then others on the boonex list do this to there customers. I do agree terabyte-hosting.com is not one of those to pull your account for such use as he understands d7 and the process and resources it uses are not 100% correct. At the same time though this does not mean he will let it go if you are really abusing his services.

I would defenitely recommend DolphinInstalls.com for you to use as hosting provider who provides Dolphin Hosting and RMS connection. They have one of the BEST services (maybe the BEST service around) and great support also!
Try them out, I guarantee you'll have the best experience ever. They can safely transfer your website to their servers too. FREE of charge!

Hi, I just upgraded from Dolphin 6 to 7 , Dolphin 7 uses a lot more resources than 6
Im running a 2.4 GHZ CPU with 10 megs of memory from Host For WEb, the CPU is now 80% of capacity....
My site has 6,000 members and an average of 40,000 unique visitors/month.
I just bring CPU usage from 20% to 80% by upgrading to Dolphin 7
Im still think there is something wrong about the excesive apache process consuming all CPU power
Now I disabled the cron thing, It will crash my server
any sugestions?
Thanks

Check to see if you're getting hit with the xml.php cpu hog bug. I was hit hard and had to move before discovering that a lot of people get hit with the same thing where xml.php hogs the cpu even when there's no one on the site. Do a search in the forums for this and see if it sounds like your problem. Some people found that a test machine without internet connection and no one on the beastie was still running the CPU to the ground.

i am going back to the bugs forum and re-initiate the post i put up about this some months ago, only to be told it was not a problem, and in fact i know it to be an absolute problem.
shared or not shared, if a file is going to spike a CPU @ 100% there is a problem. even if you were on a dedicated machine and you spike out or hang up on the xml.php file, which is weird on this instance, that they reference your index.php file more than they do the xml.php, i also see where they reference a database query on the members profiles as being an occurrence of the spike. this is not the exact same problem that i reported, this is somewhat different.
would really need to know what you have running on the site, some advert instances will cause this as well, specifically on the index.php file. as for the membership query, this would appear to me to be some bot just digging around, and the spike could not have lasted more than a few seconds, just long enough for the result to return.
cbass, yes recommending another host for this unity member was in order, because clearly TMD is suspending his account, and they are not familiar with the Dolphin application,on the other hand, you are correct that we should be researching a solution, and just changing hosts each time this would happen is not a solution. however, being on a host who understands the limits and capabilities of the dolphin script makes a tremendous difference.
there have been many write ups about these other companies listed on the boonex recommended hosting page, they lure you in with thier $4.00/month hosting plan, only to shut your account down and suggest you upgrade to VPS or Dedicated, as recommended by the developers.
CPU spike or excessive usage is a problem, and this has been expressed in detail on a bug report to the boonex staff, however, the ones who can fix it refuse to acknowledge its even a problem.
as stated, i will bump the post on the bugs forum again, please those who have been affected by this CPU spike, go and join in on the post, as it seems there were only two or three of us who posted to that thread and was even more the reason it was ignored.

DosDawg
