Hi,

can you be more specific? What is horrible about that? Basically the private features are defined by the photos/videos owners...basically if they post a new album defined in the privacy settings as only for friends or a specific list of users are you are not one of them, you will not be able to see them and they show up as "private"...

yes i hate them VERY much!! I have been waiting for those blue locks to be hidden for a loooooonnng time. They are pointless, messy, and ugly!  I still don't get it.  Just hide them if they're private.  simple as that.  It's more friendly that way. don't you agree?

I agree

can you do something?  -

D7 is an incredible software and I do not understand why you do not correct this problem

it's really unnecessary and annoying to see all private

is of no interest to our members - it devalues your software

all ads - has no private photo - why not do the same for :

all photos - Photo albums-  videos home - all videos - recent groups.........

This has been a topic for the past several months, and there's even a ticket for it that continues to be ignored to this day. I agree, private albums and media files should not be visible on the main gallery pages.

Per philshi:

****Back Up Files First****

1) /modules/boonex/photos/templates/base/browse_unit_private.html   -  Recreate as blank file and FTP it

2) /templates/base/album_unit_private.html   -  Recreate as blank file and FTP it

Worked perfect in my 7.0.3 install

3) Also did same for videos   /modules/boonex/videos/templates/base/browse_unit_private.html   -  Recreate as blank file and FTP it

Quick Fix Works Great, Good Luck

Most likely because the album's contents were private.

I've written two tickets on this, the first one dating back nine months ago.

http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/ticket/1726

http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/ticket/2008

Boonex knows that this was a major screw up, and I don't think they know how to fix it.   Fixing it is going to take a major rework, and I think they are hoping we'll just forget about it, or get tired of complaining about it.

The root of the problem is how photos and other media are retrieved from the DB.  In the case of the ugly blue padlocks, a finite number of records are retrieved, and then viewing permissions for the current user are determined.  Any records that the user does not have permission to view, are indicated by that ridiculous blue padlock.   Checking permissions on the fly, and only displaying records with viewing permissions, will require a LOT more sql queries.

This is a serious, usability issue, and is something Boonex needs to start working on.   The open ticket on this, got piled onto the 7.1 heap of "Things to work on later".  This one really belongs in the top ten list of things to work on right now, but I doubt they have such a list.  I really wish Boonex would have a brain storming session on how to fix this.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

By the way.... Displaying nothing, instead of the blue padlocks, is hardly a fix.  I think it makes things worse.

I think the best - is to hide - all blue padlock - I do not see any other solution

we will do a demonstration outside the house of Andrew Boon and AlexT  -  :)

For now I just put a few public photos in it for now until a proper fix is reached. By doing this looks a lot better than a bunch of blue padlocks. Once logged in or friended rest van be viewed
Quote · 14 Oct 2010

I replaced the pad locks with a more attractive icon.  My site is not for dating but it also has a message on the icon that states something like "this member requires you become a member of their network".

This gets rid of the ugly, stupid, rediculous, blue, I don't give a crap and didn't try padlocks and encourages memberships and friend/member connects.

Quote · 14 Oct 2010

I also agree. It seems like half of us want them to go away. We need to have a setting in the admin to hide private photo's But there should still be something in the members albums page to indicate that the member has a private photo album(s) with a photo count..  Maybe have just one private album that contains  private sub level albums. And do the same for video.

Give me something to believe in...

Here is a Quote from AlexT in regards to my first ticket requesting that only photos that the current user has permission to view, be displayed:

"It is impossible ! Every picture is checked individually upon display... so it is possible to check every picture on the page (about 20 pictures) ... but it is impossible to check all images (thousands) before display to select non-private photos for the current user."

First of all, it is a fundamental mistake to individually check viewing permission for every single photo on the page.  Every photo in a given album should have the same per-user viewing permission.  With that in mind, the most logical flow of permission checking should be:

1. Test viewing permission of the entire album, per sys_albums table where type = bx_photos.

2. Store an array of photo album IDs that the current user has permission to view.  Perhaps this can be cached.

3. Once you have the array of albums that the user has permission to view, simple display every photo in the album.  It makes no sense at all to check every single photo, and it is completely unnecessary.

The same procedure can be used for other media types.

Update: I reopened ticket # 1726.  We'll see what happens.

Yes, there are some workarounds, but any solution (yours too) requires a lot of internal changes which we can implement in 7.1, not earlier.

It is not a problem of photos/videos/sounds/files only - the same situation is with other content too. So implemenint it for albums only don't solve the problem completely.

I've moved ticket to 7.1

I just love finding out that I'm going to have a crappy website for yet another year.... or however long it takes for 7.1 to get here.
