The upgrade directory comes with the upgrade patch. After the upgrade is done, it is normally removed.

So most likely whoever did you last upgrade removed it.

Your most likely reading upgrade instructions without actually doing any of it. Step 1 has you upload the files to the server. The upgrade folder will be part of those files so you will not see it until you actually do that step.

I take it you have never used FTP before. You can select all of the files from the extracted zip file and upload them all at once. But perhaps i am misunderstanding the question. And perhaps you better practice on a test site.

or do i delete the whole file?? with all content many thanks

That does not make any sense. You delete the .htaccess file only as per the instructions. After the upgrade is complete the upgrade folder itself should be removed. Done for safety. The same reason the dolphins install folder is removed when the install is done.

But seriously. You should setup a test site to play with. You should practice on it so you know what your doing before you touch your production site.

You have to upload all the folders and yes, delete the .htaccess file in the upgrade directory then proceed as in the directions.

You should use some type of FTP program for uploading them all at once.

Hi many thanks for your help but in the guide it does not say delete the whole upgrade folder , once everything is complete does the folder stay with just the .htaccess file deleted within the upgrade folder.

The instructions do not specifically say to remove the upgrade folder. It's just something most people do after the upgrades are done. Do it or not do it. It your choice. But obviously it would not be removed until your done with it.

As i said. It should be removed for safety. I did not say it was a must. I just don't like leaving scripts on the server that are no longer needed that can be run by anyone if they know where they are.

You're welcome, here is a video I made awhile back. It shows how to upload all folders files to your server using FileZilla, it's best viewed fullscreen.

p.s. it was made to show how to do the betas, but it is the same for all upgrades.

And we can never stress this enough, backup all, as in ALL, site files and your ENTIRE database.  Keep that backup in a safe place in case of an oops.
